1235X, Silver Sabre
« on: November 03, 2011, 08:41:03 pm »
Go Up Go Down

My new, (to me), old detector is a 1983 vintage Tesoro "Silver Sabre"
I bought it because my Fisher 1235X is being sent to Fisher for service and I needed something to use while it's gone.

I paid $96 for it.
It's broken, the battery holder for the 6 AA's is missing, the battery compartment door is missing
and the coil rattles like there's no tomorrow.

But as expected it performs like champ.
As many here already know the Silver Sabre is a Hot 12 KHz machine.

I have taken it out three times.

See the pictures.

Monday night I didn't get to search very long and the battery went dead.
Since the holder for the 6 AA's is missing I used a single 9 volt and I must have picked up one that was pretty used up.
I held the 9 volt in place with blue masking tape because the battery compartment door is missing.

This machine has a "Silent Search" feature so I was actually swinging around for a couple minutes before I realized the battery was dead,.....lol.

That big spoon is sterling silver so that was cool.

Wednesday night I went to a sandbox I never tried before.
A few coins including a 2 Kune coin, (Republika Hrvatska), and a heart shaped earring with a bunch of clear stones mounted in it,
(costume jewelry).

Thursday night I went to a totlot that I hit with my Fisher 5 or 6 weeks ago.
No sand, it's wood chips.
A bunch of coins, some costume jewelry, a couple of tokens, some buttons, and a nice little gem stone.

The nearly full moon just happen to hit that little gem stone just right and the glint caught my eye.
How I found it I'll never know, it's hard enough to see pennies at night in those wood chips.

When my Fisher gets back from the repair center I'll send the Silver Sabre in for service.
Until then I'm just going to enjoy it the way it is.

The night started by me going to a sandbox that I haven't been to in over 15 years. I was really hoping for a big haul.
I only found two nickels and two pennies there.
Disappointed I decided to go to another spot that I hadn't been to in just as long. I came away with a couple of nickels a quarter and a couple of pennies.
I then decided to go back to a place I detected two weeks ago, here I found some coins.
I always start by checking the bottom of one of the slides then spread out from there.
One thing I always do is check carefully under any equipment where people hang upside down, that is where I found the rest of the quarters, some nickels, and a dime.
One odd sounding signal produced two coins in my scoop at once, a quarter and a nickel.
The rest of the coins were found at this sandbox. As was that can of party string.

Those two little jeans rivet heads sound off like a coin, as did that little stirrup looking thing.

Good news, the bracelet I found last night,.... it's copper.
It may be one of those copper bracelets people wear to help with arthritis.
I am going to clean it up.

I found out what that 2 Kune coin was all about, it's from Croatia.

Some coins, a couple of bluejeans buttons/rivets, an aluminum knob, a little carabiner, a washer, a ring, and a motorcycle key.

I hit two places, both have that shredded bark stuff, at the first place I found most of the coins and the other stuff.
At the second place I found a few coins and most of those wads of scrap aluminum.

Good deal.       Battery Trey should be not problems to find.

The cover could be made.

Tesoro should be able to fix you up.

Hey homefire, I already bought a battery holder, a Philmore, best available.

Tesoro repair said they have the cover and for me just to send it in.

Now that my 1235X is back I'm going to send the Silver Sabre in for tuning and repair.

I really like it, the two weeks it's gone it will be missed that's for sure.

Yes they are homefire, a lot of people use them still.

Well my 1235X is back from Dr. Fisher

I took it out last night and hit three sandboxes.

I did try the 8" round spider coil the night before, but it was cold out and after finding two coins I left and went home.

The finds above I found using a 5" x 10" elliptical coil that I got in a trade for my 10 1/2" spider coil.

I never used one before, it seemed to work pretty well.

Yes homefire, that's the one, but mine is a little scratched up and used looking.

Those machines don't cost very much, on average about $80 to $100

But they truly do a great job of finding stuff.

I know a few people that use a Silver Sabre as a back up machine, or to loan to friend or family
when one or the other tags along for a day of fun in the field.

Here is the time line for Tesoros starting back in the day,

{alt}

The original Silver Sabre, the Silver Sabre II, and the Silver Sabre Plus are all 12 KHz machines.

A very clean Silver Sabre II just sold on eBay for $106

Tesoro has never made a bad machine, but these simple little gems really get the job done.

Thanks Arfie, It will be real nice to see what it can do with a good tune up!

I can't wait!

When I got my SS the battery holder was missing too about a £1 to replace.
But as you said they do work with one 1x9v.
Battery box door is pretty easy to fabricate as it just needs a bend
in it to hold it in place.
I suppose the plastic door clips are still available (dont lobos have them?)
But I've never seen them for sale though over here though....

Hey chopz, The battery holder I bought here cost $1.86 American, about the same as the one you bought.

I think you're right, the Lobo looks like it uses the same battery door knob.

Tesoro is a Great company to deal with, contact them and ask about what you need, I'm sure they will help you.

Here is a picture, hope it helps.
