An old Safari with duct tape & zip ties
« on: March 04, 2012, 07:11:09 am »
Go Up Go Down

  Hi All,
Started searching this cove on a tidal creek recently , made some Ok finds at first, couple toasted half Reals, coppers, buckles, buttons, balls and various other items, lots of scrap copper & lead.
First decent find comes from an iron patch, between two rocks and maybe 3" down, Big Hammered Portugese Silver  Cheesy
Turns out to be an undated issue of King Johanne IV, 1640-1654, took a while to ID this one, very few online, and all of those show a countermark from Johannes successor Alphonse, who revalued the coinage.
 (which mine lacks  Grin
l got word from a local 'old timer' that a certain area of a cove was used as as swimming & picnic area when he was a child, Got permission from the property owner to scan the saltmarsh areas above the waterline,
So, around lowtide I stated searching in the shallow water.
I found toasted SLQ, 1907 Barber Quarter & a smooth large copper, as the tide advanced, I moved inshore, and not making any more good finds, decided to head north to a Fine Cellarhole that usually gives up some goodies.
Speed scanning as I walk back to my truck, I get a signal, (same scenario when I got my 4 Reale Cob)
Recover what looks like a lead token, (Got my Etrac in two tone, and didn't look at the readout)
I put it in my pocket with my other coins, then shop at the market for an hour, & drive 35 miles to the cellarhole site.
before starting the 3/4 mile walk, I empty my pockets and give the 'Token' a rinse.
Lo and behold, I see the tree clearly, Whoa, stop, jaw drop.
turn it over, see the X...  Heart pounding, I pull out my phone, snap a quick pic & send it off to Mike at

, I marvel at it a little more, then wrap it in a piece of wet paper & head off to find some more goodies, (must be my lucky day, right!), up there is where I got the '47 LC,
didn't spend much time hunting there, I wanted to get home for some research on the Tree.
It appears to be a very late die state Noe-1, the die crack is advanced to where it looks like the date area is about to pop out, (another example with die crack shown for reference)
A view from the side shows the 'S' shape typical of minting in a Rocker Press.
John Hull was producing Silver coins for about 30 years, and there was great difficulty keeping them in local circulation, I believe there are still many in the ground, too bad there's so much ground...
Hoping that someone out there gets a plain 'NE' coin this year!
Love my Etrac and Safari, Minelab makes great machines, can't beat that TTF mode for pulling goodies from the iron,
Mike at Woodland (above) is the man to see if you're in the market for a detector, best deals and customer service that goes above & beyond, He'll even make a payment plan if you don't have all the money now.
Got Minelabs customer service award, and that says a lot right there...
Thanks for looking & Happy hunting All!    Herbie.

Thanks All!
I Went back to the site, and found this Oak tree shilling just under the surface.
the 2 O'clock position of the 'N' of New England identifies it as the Noe-3 Variety.
'Very Rare' 13-30 known  Cheesy (photos 2 and 4 are for comparison)
Best wishes and Happy hunting All!

Thats some awesome finds .. i'd better get back there and find a few more  Detecting.. ones in great condition go for 10's of 1000's of dollars each .. really poor ones go for like $500.. but they have to be authentic, which i'm sure yours are ..

congratulations on the awesome finds .. sorry i'm repeating myself .. awestruck  Shocked

Thanks Lord Dracon,
I got a very foreboding feeling when I dug that oak...
hard to explain,   I have not searched the area since.
What's there will still be there when I decide to return..
However rare they may be, in this condition I would much rather hold them than have the dollars..
I dig enough scrap brass & copper to cover expenses Wink
HH & Best digs everyone  Detecting

Hi SW
That's a nice bunch of old coins, a pity the elements have been so unkind to the shilling as I know for US finds that is top find and maybe there are others there so that trip was worth the effort.........HH..........Johnnn

Thanks John  Waveing
Even with condition issues, these 3 silvers are among my most prized recoveries.
As long as they can be Identified, I am pleased.
I hope everyone gets to experience the excitement of such discoveries  Wink
Happy research and Recovery all!  Clapp
