Interesting about the orphanage. There are a couple pieces of jewelry in the forum shop that were gold plating that still has a little bit of the plating on them. I think I go with the poster above in saying that this could be shoe buckle (from a child's shoe). Also, I have coins in my pocket that are thirty years old. Which could place it late Victorian, which would fall in line with more machine made objects being available, as Christian said. Just my opinions.

It looks to me like it is made of copper with a little glass stone for ornament.  Could it be a lady attached a small gold watch to it and wore it on her breast.  The large pin on the back held it to her blouse, the watches leather strap was around the other and hung down by gravity.  Maybe around the turn of 19th Century?  Probably lost at a picnic way back when...look for the gold watch, it may still be there  Of course I may have it all wrong too...
