Go Up Go Down

an old man told me yesterday of a small mining town that lasted only a brief period of time in utah history, and told me that he was certain that almost nobody even knew it ever existed, let alone that the relics of the past were still there.  on my way home from meeting with him, i stopped by and hiked into the area described in his directions and found an old mine that i went to today and took pictures of that are in the prospecting forum today as well.

I didn't see any old foundations or areas that revealed anything about a small town once being there, but today i ventured east a couple hundred meters and found some old bottles, pieces of old jars, part of an old stove, and started to dig on the hunch that it was an area where they had dumped their trash.  i dug a ten inch diameter and ten inch deep hole and found layers of their garbage.  i found bottle and jar pieces, pieces of an old cowboy boot, shards of metal in different shapes, a yellow animal bone (i hope it's and animal).  Anyway i found alot of old old stuff and this object was one of the items, anyone know what this?  this town was around railroad tracks and mines back in the day, and is about eleven to twelve inches in length

Don't know enough to hazzard a guess. Is it Iron or brass?

it's iron, it's highly rusted and kind of looks like a crowbar.  it purpossely curves towards as it narrows towards the tip as if used for prying. and then the head of it has a little "lip" jut similar looking to the head of a railroad spike, but just a little smaller

I'm going to need to check a book at my local library, but if you found it in the area of the mine, it could be a lamp/lantern holder.   Fortunately, I know that my library carries the book I need.

Looks like something known as a crevicing tool for scraping gravel out of a crevice. Looks home made but very functional.
