Well, horse or farm equipment definitely would NOT be out of place/context on a Boer battle site.

I am not so sure about it being for animals as the hill that this site is on did not cater for animals. Their horses would first of all been left out in the fields to be killed, as no big structures are there for any type of stabling. The area was definitely a foot area, with no roads dirt or otherwise. There is also no sign of any farming on that hill as all the area is very rocky. Even to get their guns up there would of been a mission  Rider
I think it was something to do with the big guns or to do with webbing etc, otherwise is not even from that war, but was dropped later  Fountain. I will look into horse stuff though, in fact I have friends who are big into horses and will show them and see what they say.

Thanks guys,
Peter

Hi Peter

Have you ever put up a fence? if you did then you will now that the wires running from pole to pole are puled tight and used to support the rest of the fence now I could be wrong but what you have there look very much like a part of the tensioner  I used one some time ago and the links are to adjust the tension in the wire a bit like you would set the pressure with a vice grip by setting the screw.

Regards Xavier

Hello Xavier

That is a pretty good guess. Is it Boer war or post Boer war?

I read some where that the British with their Block houses they also put up hundreds of km of barbed wire. Perhaps it is a relic from that time?

Hardluck  Huh?

Hi Hardluck

Well if it was used during the Boer war it may well have been used to erect fencing for their concentration camps and that would make it over 100 years old on the other hand it may well have fallen of a pick up truck known over here as a bakkie I dont know if there are farms in the close vicinity to where it was found But I'm sur that Pgill will be able to tell us.

i was reading a book last night on the nez perce indian war and the battle of Big Hole.  I swear i saw a picture in there of a find on the battlefield that looke dsimilar to these pictures.  as soon as i can get home to my book, i will let you kno if anything transpires from the find photographs.  At first i thought these pictures looked like a " head space, and timing guage" for a weapon system like a .50 cal.  But it look like the battle took place in 1899. am i correct?
