Xavier, thanks for the reply.... it is possible that it could be a fence tensioner, although there are no fences there now. I also have not picked up any pieces of fence in the area as I have in other sites from the Boer war. The war was over a hundred years ago, just!!!
The area where this came from is on top of a very rocky hill which in them days was surrounded by other hills. But there is one part which you can see Johannesburg from. As said it was an artillery post with about 3 guns and the walls where the troops walked. The side facing Johannesburg has a sharp drop, so nothing will drive up there, I think the guns were taken up in pieces carried probably by the troops on their backs.
Toleary34, if you can look for us it will be very much appreciated. Battle of big hole? let me not ask  Shocked

Thanks everyone for the input, these mysteries are always good to keep us on our toes  :Smiley

God bless

Grin  no it's not how it sounds.  it was a surpirise attack on an indian camp by US troops, where the Indinas out manuevered and pinned down the US forces and were able to get the majority of the camp out in time, but I know that 90+ Indians....men, women, and children were killed.  don't know how many US soldiers and volunteers were killed.  I'm not to far into the book, but visited the battlefield a couple of months ago.  as soon azs I get back to my book, I'll let you know whether I was mistaken or not about the item in question.  Take care

It looks kind of like a chain bit or snaffel as some call it. You found half of it.

My first thought was a snaffle bit as well, but the proportions are wrong.

yes the chain links are too big and the side bar is narrower than ones I've seen. It would have been a crude bit.

Not sure about the snaffle bit, although I do see where you get the idea from. To try and help with this identity I have managed to bend the main link free so that you can get a better look at the hook part. I have added these pictures below.

Thanks guys for the suggestions and for all the thinking to help me. I do appreciate it very much.

God bless
Peter

That hook part gets me that's why I suggested the tensioner but now I just don't know what it could be

This is all that is left of a Treasure chest that was bound up with chains and locked with locks.  Look for bones of the man who was killed and thrown on top of the chest to guard it with his spirit.  The skull should still be there as it is usually the last to deteriorate.  Take the skull to a psychic and have him or her go back in time and get to the bottom of this mystery.  I can hardly sleep at night as I see this image even when I close my eyes tee hee hee.
