Okay...here's what i had in my book.  It looked similar to your relic here, except it was longer and had a point for going into the ground, it also had three rings like your artifact here, and was called an " iron picket pin" (cavalry issue).  now this was used for picketting a cavalry mans horse in one spot for the time being.  i tried to take a picture of the item in my book, but it was not working for me.  I've been googling it and found some pictures, but it none of them look like the one in my book, that has the three distinct rings.  I'll keep looking around, but maybe this is a start...maybe we should lean towards searching for cavalry issued artifacts?  anyway, I'll keep trying, hope this has helped a little.

TJ......That actually makes a lot of sense.   So far you're answer seems the most logical (whether it is right or not maybe another story, but at this point, that's where I'm putting my gold).

toleary34, I have seen what you are referring to, but that may be a tall order to find as there were SO MANY "mammy made" picket pins and many "official" issues before the M1912, which is STILL (yes there is an issue) picket pin/hammer..

toleary34, every bit helps.... I have also looked at pictures of these pins you are talking about, but they are quite long and are hammered into the ground etc.... The picture I posted looks full length.... If you look at mine it looks like a "Key" that is used in machinery with rounded ends but only about 3mm thick, but has the extra piece on top, the hook with the 1" rings. Hope that makes it clearer..... It seems to me because of the rounded ends, that maybe it was some sort of slide?Huh??

God bless
Peter
Sometimes I do get clever?Huh? to make it easier I have made a drawing so that it looks clearer... Hope this helps, even with inches dimensions  Clapp

man i don't know....that is a mystery for sure.  are there any local musuems in your area that might have a similar artifact?  i found something at the sight of an old flour mill and traveled around to old mill sites to see if i could identify it, but had no luck.  i also researched pictures and wrote a museum in the Eastern part of the US, and it is still a mystery.  I hope you can find out what it is though.

I actually went to the military museum, but they were not that helpful to me, in fact the chap just turned around and said that he did not know what it was.... He never even looked properly.
Someone sooner or later will get the answer  Idea

Thanks for all your help though, it does throw out other ideas.

God bless
Peter

Thank you toleary34, it is good of you to help. I have looked at the site, and it may be a place to go at some stage.... I will have to dig deeper into the area and see if I can detect there or not. The place is about 1 hour or so from me, so not too bad.

God bless
Peter Gill
