You're right....jury is definitely out on this one.

BTW, I was thinking of one similar to this Ottoman mortar

but clearly more ornate (and probably older, but still likely to be Ottoman or possibly Italian).

Be interesting to see what it finally turns out to be.

Hey guys -

Yeah, the suspense is killing me !  Just goes to prove though what we've known all along - metal detecting is a cool hobby that sometimes presents some surprises.  I'm going to try to get it to an antique dealer sometime this weekend.  If I get any "confirmed" hints, I'll let you know.

I'd build a nifty cradle for that thing and keep it loaded at all times! Grin

It looks to me like a miniature mortar (cannon) replica barrel. The two rods off the side would fit into the wooden carriage frame for adjusting elevation of the shot, and the small one on the top would be the torch hole (fuse of gunpowder) to fire it. You might find a weaponry book and look for siege cannons. I hope that this helps. Smiley

I think you are right on the Mortar or Artillery piece. However, from the looks of the art work on it it would have been from the early 17 or 1600's like a turk or ottoman cannon. VERY cool piece, am envious

Licking myself in the butt again for not reading far enough again BA and GD already said ottoman. I love my military history. AGAIN great find.

With it being so small it looks more to me like some sort of salute mortar or signal cannon.  It may not be all that old since you can search the internet and there are people that make all kinds of replica miniture cannons and mortars all over the place.  Many are cast in brass or bronze, but could be copper.  Probably was cradled in some type of wood carriage with an elevation screw that the nubbin would rest on and allow control of elevation.  If it was a funtioning mortar, there should be a small pin hole on the opposite side of the nubbin.  The two side posts would allow it to swivel up or down.  That is what it looks like to me.  Looks like there is some flags on the backside with some type of crest.

It does look like a toy cannon or a candle snuffer?
