Ah that's ok Ian - once I saw a similar one in better shape selling for $12, I just tossed it in with other finds. Some day when I'm not expecting, I'll probably find some more info on it. Seems to be how it works. Sue

Have you really scratched it, is it really heavy.  It could be gold.

use a small fine file or something or take it to a jewler to scratch on the gold stone.  Good luck

Hi Sue - This medalion is why I took the time to join up here. I have one exactly the same in excellent condition. Have you found any other information on it? There is a bit of a story behind this one which makes me think it may be of some value. I look forward to your reply. I will send you a picture of mine if you like.

Hi Cameron, Thanks for joining - really appreciate your effort. It was a very pleasant surprise to see a response to the post.

I haven't found out any more about the medal. I showed it, locally, to a guy who sells old coins and medals and he said maybe it was just a souvenir. Neat that you have the same one and in excellent condition. Mine had contact with soil, probably for quite awhile. Can't wait to see yours and know more about the medals. You can upload a jpg picture here or feel free to email me at addastra@aol.com

This medal is 2 7/8 inches across, fairly heavy, shows wear, and says Calendario Azteca Y Piedra Del Sol Mexico around the front. Aztec calendar and sun stone. It pegs silver on my detector, in the 50 cent region. My detector is very general in ID of metal though and goes into overload crazy on this thing. I scanned an old tarnished silver quarter along with the medal and the metal doesn't look alike. I cleaned the tarnish off the side of the medal and it's a silvery colored metal. I've been trying to get an idea of value and info online but all I've found is an uncirculated copper one that sold for $50. Sue

It is not Aztec, but a reproduction and looks to me like a mostly silver alloy, try a zinc plate in a solution of washing soda, and place  the medallion on it, in the solution, a lot of the sulphide will disappear. True Aztec would not have the Spanish words.  Shocked

That's all right, Goldigger. It vanishes in a puff of smoke in 2012.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
