I don't think you understand my role here. I am a moderator. It's my JOB to point out things like what you brought to our attention. Leaving explosives in the ground after you discover them is actually against the law in some places. Your cavalier attitude is going to hurt someone someday. The fact that you reported it here makes a permanent record of your action, too.

Yes, finding relics is great fun but losing a limb because of unexploded ordnance is just wrong no matter how much fun you are having. Your fun doesn't outweigh the issue of public safety.

Here's an idea for you. Carry fluorescent paint in a spray can with you. Small cans are available. When you find unexploded ordnance, call the police and tell them where it is after you mark the ground with the paint. Easy. Then you can go back to having your fun and be a responsible treasure hunter.

The following is not a request. Do not again address me like this. I am not the bad guy here. If you do it again, I will take your case up with the other moderators and admins and when you feel the heat of our discussion, you won't like it.

Hi golddigger
I'm not sure you fully understand the massive size of the Ardennes forest, it is impossible to tell somebody where an excact spot is but I will take your advice and next time I find something I'm not sure of I will leave a blob of paint in the middle of thousands and thousands of acres of forest, what colour would you recommend?
I have been reading some of your posts, very interesting but you do seem to complain a lot don't you?
Greetings Dave Mad

Complain? Hardly. What I will tell you is that there's no future in arguing that leaving a live bomb in the ground is the right thing to do. Not around this bunch. Most of us are smart enough and concerned enough for innocent people who might get hurt to do the right thing. Apparently, judging by your comments, you have no idea what the right thing to do is.

Going out and reading my posts would do you good if you took that chip from your shoulder and paid attention.

OK, I'm not saying that you are wrong but what do you do? Please imagine this. " You drive to the Ardennes, begin hunting for relics, not live ammo, before you leave for home you have dug 300 holes and found some very nice relics but within those 300 holes are 50 that contain possible unexploded objects in an area of several sq km's, how do you tell authorities where the florecent paint could be? Or do you think it is better to carry any unexploded stuff around with you untill you are finished, and then ring the authorities when you find a place that can be found? Or! maybe you think it is better to abandon your holiday the minute you find something suspect? This message is not sarcastic, this message is sincere.
Please don't try and threaten me again. Huh?
Greetings Dave

Hi Dtm,

No threats just concern..... If I can give a little idea here? How about carrying a GPS with you to mark the spots where you find this stuff and then report the coordinates to the authority? That would work.... I am also loving your topics and want more of them.... But I would hate it if you got blown up or something, like with that mine you were pictured holding.... I held my ears while looking in case it went off.....
A little story, hopefully to get you to smile  Grin but to show you what can happen when messing around with the live stuff.

When I was in the army in 1979 (Rhodesia). I was sent out to a place to blow up some unexploded bombs that had been dropped on an area. These bombs had little rubber balls in them that would kill on contact.
Well two of them had landed in a very shallow pond with the top of the bombs sticking a little out of the water. We checked out this situation and decided to join all the bombs together with plastics and detonators to one power source  Angry We then went behind a chicken coup that was made of corrugated iron, set up the battery and pushed the switch.... Well these bombs all went off together and nearly tore our hiding place to shreds..... Hundreds of these little balls hit this tin..... you can imagine how it sounded..... like 1" hail stones hitting a tin roof.... I was deaf for nearly two days after this...... Well lesson was learnt, do not play the fool with explosives. We became the joke of the camp after that one  Funny

Keep sending us the great stories and photo's, and take extra care.

God bless
Peter

Go Up Go Down

Hi Guys.  Very interesting subject here.  I was stationed in Germany from Aug 1980-Jul 88 and went to several battlefields, but the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), was always my favorite place to go.  Good Lord, but I dug up enough munitions to start my own war (I'll post some photos when I dig out my CD's).  There were a couple of places though that were really bad for unexploded ordinance (UXE).  One was in the woods near Rocherath-Krinkelt (often referred to as the Twin Villages because of their proximity to one another), and any of the patches of wooded land around St. Vith (Bastogne was pretty bad too).  Long story short, I always took some type of white material that I cut into strips.  Whenever I found UXE, I would set it by a tree or two and place a piece of cloth arou nd the tree.  I did this repeatedly until I got back to a main trail or road.  When I went back through the local village/town, I would stop in at the local police station and report what I had found.  Only once was I asked what was I doing out there.  Standard answer was that I wasn't looking for what I found.  Anyway, I know it takes time, but to try to mark the location where something has been found is somehow a good thing to do.  By the way, I found a 1943 Mercury dime in a pile of rotting clothes at what was an aid station not too far off the Wahlerscheid Road between Wahlerscheid and R-K.  Whatever you do though, be extremely careful with what you dig up in the Ardennes or any other battlefield - you can get very dead, very quickly !!!
