Hi all, It is good to see that there are people from all around the world on here sharing ideas. I was wondering if there are many Australians here? I was wondering if there are people that hunt gold, coins or other items.

Stalley welcome to the forum I think there are several  Australians here who post regular. I use to know a guy who hunted gold nuggets in the outback in the 70s he make a good living at it. Can you still do that. Good Luck

Hi seldom, Yes you can go looking for gold. West Australia and Victoria are the best states. Here in Queensland the Goverment made it hard and it cost money , That is all our goverment thinks of here.  Smiley

Hi Ken,
I'm thinking of coming to Oz next year for 3 weeks or so (Saving hard!).
One thing I've always wanted to do is dig for "Opals"
Can you still do that? or have the government got that one stitched up too?

Hi Paul A, The opal fields here are not to bad. The Fields west of lighting Ridge have been getting good opal in places. Local Goverment at the fields changed the laws a few years back and it is better for the fossicker there. The large miners can't store soil on there mining ground now. They have to put them in what they call Dumps. People are allowed to fossick these dumps. When I was there last I seen a women get a $16,000.00 stone out of a dumps. Some of  the Aboriginals go ther a lot and they showed me some nice stones opal they had got when I was there. Regards Ken

Yes seldom, The Gold here is best in the Australian States I mention they produced the big nuggets and there were a lot of nuggets found in these States. Some of the good Detector opporaters here do very well. The ML Pi detectors are the best in most places but you will find gold with a VFL and some of the new VFLs are going not to bad here now. The word is that the new GPX 4500 is the best on the market and I don't realy know but a lot of people here do very well with the older SDs and GPs. I have noticed that there seems to became a market here for the VFLs so I don't know if the older ones are selling because they are cheaper or the way the state of the world is at this time. The opal and Sapphire here are easy ground to get on to but the opal can be hard work if you decide to mine but the rewards can be very good. The Shapphires are not worth much at this time and I have some very good stone I use to cut them. There is  place in Queensland near Winton it don't get talked about very much but a lot of good opal comes from there. Regards Ken

Hi Paul A, A lot of people come to the Lighting Ridge Fields and get some work with the big miners and in there spare time they work the Dumps out there and do ok. Most of the opal at the Ridge is 50ft or more down I have been down 90ft there but you need to have Power and pay to have the hole put down buy the people that have the boring machines out there there is a lot of red tape to peging a mine you are better to just work the dumps. There are a lot of other areas in Australia but the Ridge has the black opal and they are worth the most. I have seen some realy nice stones in the black opal some sell for over $150,000.00 I have seen them. I would like to find one good small one. They are so nice and there play of color is fantastic. Regards ken

Go Up Go Down

Hi Stalley, I live in  suburb of Adelaide and spend most winters in the Western Aust. goldfields. I have the Minelab 4500 and found it exceptional, last year I found over 400 pieces a total weight of 22 ounces which included a 9 ounce piece. I ocassionally visit the Victorian goldfields but usually poor results compared to the West, I think the Victorian fields have been hammered as they are so close to Melbourne and clubs can go there for the day.
Regards, Brian
