I started this topic and had no problem with what Rattlesnake Joe had to say and would add that he was not the one who demonstrated an attitude. Fight

Starting a topic doesn't give you ownership of the topic. Someone addressed me and I answered. It's not your call. It's mine. I didn't have to answer but I chose to and I was also courteous when I did. But I also pointed out to him that I wasn't discussing tunnels. That was a new spin on what was being written. I gave you both an irrefutable argument from direct testimony and his best reply was, "but there were tunnels on Iwo Jima." That had nothing to do with Yamashita and his last words or the fate that became him. I was trying to help you along here and Joe threw in a red herring. Joe seems to have understood. Why can't you?

Might I point out that the geology of Iwo Jima and the geology of Philippines in not identical  and those differences would in turn mean that tunnelling into the hillsides and mountainsides would be quite different propositions.   Further the tunnels at Iwo were meant as defensive battlements (an essential use of military and other resources) where as the time spent digging treasure caves would have been better spent preparing defensive fortifications.

I was certainly not looking for ownership but for comments on an open forum that relate to the subject. My understanding of the word forum is a meeting or medium for an exchange of views. You say it is not my call but again I refer you to the fact that the exchange of views were on an open forum and I like anyone else on this site has a right to voice my opinion which was that you were far from courteous in you vitriolic post aimed at Rattlesnake Joe.

Yamashita?s testimony is irrefutable but your argument is not; it?s just your take on it or interpretation of what his words meant relative to there being any undiscovered treasure. The fact that Yamashita was penitent and held no malice toward his captors, does not mean that he did not take some secrets to his grave.

What I meant by all that was to impress upon you the futility in believing that there is significant treasure left from WWII. Your best bet in finding treasure is to look at your tens of thousands of years of history and find out where, if at all, gold and treasure was accumulated for reasons known to your ancient cultures.

Look at Central and South America. They're both loaded with treasure from peoples who were contemporaries of your own ancestors. It's more likely that you would discover a cavern or underground system somewhere that holds ancient treasure. But if you waste your entire time looking for what everyone and their uncle is looking for and not finding, then you will join the masses of empty handed dreamers.

Yamashita swore there was no more treasure than what he had with him. He really had no reason to hide it at that point. Nobody in Japan was in a position to hurt him any more than his captors were about to do.

I believe that the Philippines is absolutely loaded with treasure. I truly do. But not much of it is going to be from good old Yamashita. It'll be from the early Catholic Church, the Spaniards and the ancient peoples of the Philippines who are long forgotten. I believe that anyone bold enough to change directions is going to be finding it, too. Not somebody who tries to crack open a bunker that has hardened cement. What they find in bunkers are the equivalent of C-Rations and maybe some ammunition.

I agree 100% with all of that but human nature being what it is means that this legend will attract people until the end of time.

I am researching right now to find a suitable site to go metal detecting early next year. My home town, Cardiff, dates back thousands of years and the Romans had numerous forts and settlements dotted around. I see little point in just tramping through an open field unless there is  a realistic chance of making a find.
Cheers!
