Question:

What concerns are worries should one be mindful of while Metal Detecting, between the sand bars in shallow water.

Will be at Panama City Beach, Fl.  May and June.

Love the new hobbie but want to be aware of the physical risks?

And also stay safe.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Including attire to be worn?

New to this and want to start of right and stay safe.

Over on the Treasure Coast side (East Side)   We never got in the water 1 hour before sun up or 1 hour before sun down.

That was feeding time.

We had more then our share of shark BITES, not attacks during those times.

We stayed out of the water if you knew the Blue Fish was running too.

I've had sharks bumb me before trying to see what I was.

Well MM like hunting in any urban environment humans are your worst danger. You will find that most water hunter like me hunt at night and during the off season when few people are around.
Summer hunting in Florida jellyfish and Portuguese Man of Wars can be a problem and like here the locals will tell you to pee on the sting to stop the burning I tell 100's of people a year that but truth be told a little vinegar will work wonders, keep a bottle in the car. Sun burn is always a problem if you can get a summer light weight wet suit from the surf or dive shop if not keep your shirt on to keep your back from burning. Wear some kind of shoes are swim booties lot of glass and metal in the gulf.
OK back to humans. A guy with a metal detector on the beach is not the novelty it was 40 years ago when I started are for that matter even 10 years ago so most people will just ignore you but for the occasional drunk that wants to use your detector, if there are people around just walk away he will find someone else to bother and leave you be.
Don't worry to much just have fun and remember to post your finds here.

White Tips!   The water on that side is always churned up.   You can only see about 3ft most of the time.

Never seen one larger then 5ft but that was enough for me.  LOL!

Don't Wizzz in the water.   It's like ringing the Din Din Bell.   LOL!   Shocked

Seldom and Homefire have gave you some great advice...I'm thinking SUNGLASSES take an  EXTRA pair. (safty glasses) The blowing sands (if any) will cause you to squit your eyes and you really need to keep your eyes PEELED at all times...you probably knew this but I forget mine all the time  Idiot

Stingrays. Try to slide your feet across the bottom , rather than taking steps. if you bump into them , they'll take off. If you step on them , you're gonna get stuck.
                                           Good Luck.        HH

Florida Keys Pirate,

How far down florida til you got to watch out for gators ?  Shocked

Also anything with papaya, (I think adolfs meat tenderizer has it) nutralizes the proteins in the jellyfish and manowar tenicals stings, also works on bee stings (any protein based poison bites). if applyed soon enough may stop a alurgic reaction as it destroyies the ventom that causes a reaction. Still you should seek medical help.   (Papaya powder should be an every medkit, it could save a life)

I was stationed at Patric AFB.   I looked for gators for the first six months I was there. Never seen one.

One day I was fishing inland about 50 miles and been there all day.

Looked down and seen one sunning right were I was standing.. It was a Wopper!  Must had been like 3 foot!

Inland in the fresh water the Snapper Turtles are the ones you need to worry about.  LOL!
