I know practically nothing on what makes a good metal detector and what type a beginner might find useful. Since I would like to go diving for treasure, one that works in the water and on land but is very decently priced would probably be great.
If someone could let me know what brands might be good for a beginner on a budget, that would be great. : ) Any tips for metal-detecting would also be greatly appreciated!

Hello Rune,

Welcome to our forum.

Well, that's a though one! Submersable detectors are about the most expensive ones. There are cheap models like teh Viper from China priced at about USD 200.00 but I would NOT recommend buying them. They have a very poor depth and will leak.

The best waterproof machine remains the Fisher CZ-21 in my oppinion. It can be bought at about USD 350 - 450.00 2nd hand from eBay.

Your 2nd best bet would be a preowned Tesoro machine like the Stingray (has less depth though). It would be about USD 200.00 - USD 300.00 on eBay.

Please keep us posted!

Best wishes,

Christian

I'de like to know ? Are the underwater submersable detectors only good for underwater detecting or are they just as good on dry land .  Meaning they would be especialy configured for underwater conditions, can they be retuned for dry land contitions ?  what would their advantages and disadvantages either way ?

I have used the Whites Surf Master Pro and the Garrett Infinium LS in the water and on land. The difference is that they have been water proofed to use under water and some coils are minus buoyancy so the do not try to float when under water. This makes them a little heavy when used on land.  You can get lighter land coils to use though, which I have done. One advantage is that they are PI detectors and another is that they can be used in the rain or wet conditions with no harm done to the detector. Smiley

Undedrwater detectors, both from VLF and PI types, can be used with ease on land.

Some are heavy. Some are slow recoverers inland, but it will work.

The most versatile, IMHO, being the Tesoro Stingray. The White's surfmaster II (NOT the PI unit), is pretty good on both beaches and inland.

But there are others, like the CZ21, or the CZ 20, (2nd hand) ...

Tough choice !

HH

Well, the Stingray & Whites have too little depth in my oppinion. Hence the most versatile machine remains the CZ-20. It is often less than USD 400.00 2nd hand.

Best wishes,

Christian

underwater detectors are "all metal" PI types and fine for water hunting but very heavy (not really a issue in water but a big issue on land) and not that good for land hunting due to being  "all metal" only --- lots and lots of junk target digging

thus normally folks that hunt water and land have 2 differant machines one for water / wet use --and another for land use / that discrimanates-- so you can try to filter out some trash
