Are there any rules for hunting at school yards? I know to go after all the kids and teachers are gone, but is it allowed?

Here in New Mexico it ok as long as the gates are open.

Stay off the Foot ball field or Turf.

Fill all holes.

You could aways ask!

 Wise

Some times its best to just shut up and color!

If others are there doing there thing after hours, I would assume its ok for you to do your thing.

 Great

Generally most schools are public, unless stated otherwise.  To be sure, it would be a good idea to consult the school, or school facility.

Last week, I went to the local elementary school, but it had a fence all around it even though some people were playing ball out on the field behind the fence, so I went down a block to the local middle school which had no fence and poked around for an hour. I found some junk, but no coins. The private security guard kept driving around the campus, he waved once so I guess I was ok. Upon leaving I saw him and said is it ok for me to md there and he said no problem. He listed some schools with no fences in the area. He said fenced schools are basically off limits. If you are doing no harm and I don't catch you climbing the fence then you are ok there too, he said. So, I learned some things last week about doing schools.

A lot of schools, worldwide, have fences that keep the kids from rolling a ball out into the street while allowing access to playgrounds. A fence like this is common:

                         ____________

_______________       ____________________

People can walk in and out while balls won't roll into the street.

Our public schoolgrounds in Brownwood, Texas have always been very productive hunting grounds for detector users.  A few years ago, a friend and I were hunting one of the oldest elementary schools in the area.  We had detected there many times over the years and had been there for about an hour when a lady approached us and said she was the groundskeeper for the school and that we were not allowed to metal detect the grounds.  We started conversing with her and I told her we had retrieved several coins and targets from the immediate area already that day and asked her if she could find one of the many spots where we had dug.  She walked around and looked for several minutes and failed to find one of the spots.  During her search, I explained that we always removed all trash that we located and carefully re-filled the holes so that there was no evidence that we had even been there.  She then told us that we were welcome to detect there anytime.  That is why our metal detector club, Central Texas Treasure Club, always teaches new members the Code of Ethics and techniques of properly retrieving targets.  We also teach our members to always cover up holes dug by beginners or unethical detectorists that they encounter while hunting.  We always try to keep an untarnished public image and have been called on by local police departments in the past to help them find metal evidence from crime scenes.
The Treasure Hunters Code of Ethics we use is on our homepage:

Yes, it is always good to clean up your hunting area... More people should do the same, not only w/MDing, but at our public parks... I have found that one of the best area's to hunt is the drainage area near the parking lots.  I went out yesterday to one of the smaller colleges here and found some change and lots of pens.

Thank you all for the info here...

In Southern California is usually okay to metal detect on public school grounds as long as it's not posted, and the gates are open after school hours.
