Go Up Go Down

G'day Inkspot,
I've tried both headphones and relying on an external speaker which I hang from my harness on my left shoulder.  I'm able to turn the volume down so it doesn't become a problem to either myself or annoying to anyone in my vicinity (which I don't usually experience because I make a point of prospecting alone, although a pal or my wife could be camped nearby).

Headphones will certainly enable you to pick up the more indistinct signals - but then, so will the external clip-on speaker if you're concentrating.  My main objection to headphones is that to a very large extent you're unable to hear what's going on around you in the bush.  I walk my Labrador in the scrub near my home on a daily basis and often come across a detectorist working away, oblivious to what's going on around him.  My dog is friendly but curious and often approaches the detector operator, wishing to day hello.  Invariably, if the detectorist is using headphones, he suddenly sees my rather large dog within a metre or two and comes close to fouling his britches.  No, in my opinion you have to be aware of what's going down around you, which means and external speaker is favourite.

Regards

Forester

My wife and I both use standard walkman/mp3 player/portable video player stereo headphones with adapters from Radio Shack so we can plug them into the detector.   small, lightweight, inexpensive, available in a variety of styles so you can find the one that's most comfortable for you + you can get configurations that permit you to hear sounds from your surroundings (very helpful in areas where you might fall prey to either natural or human predators/troublemakers)

For noisy areas I use the Black Widows. They have excellent external sound rejection. Hotter that hell. Don't let some one sneak up on ya with these. They definataly have their purpose though. Great listening for the weak quiet signals.

Use most any over the ear type for general detecting and try to get ones with a little higher impedance (30 ohms or so) than the standard 8 ohm audio phones. In some security concerns I pull one ear cup off an ear to keep a listen for external trouble.

Down here on the Border, you need to know what's going on around you.

Cheap Ear Buds from the Family Dollars store.   $1.00 a set, keep 5 sets in the truck.

After years of Telecoms in the USAF, my Ear holes don't work so well any more any ways.

I have a permanent Notch filter at 2600 and 2800 Htz.  Any thing above that is gone.

Turn on a Fan and I can't hear a phone ring in the same room.

I hear what you're saying about knowing whats going on around you.  The ear bud idea is interesting.
