A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

Go Up Go Down

When I was a lad, the extremes in temperature didn't bother me at all. Cross country skiing, 50+ mile hikes and 200 mile canoe trips were normal and happened when the mood struck, not by the weather. I was on the Mississippi once when a tornado crossed about 300 yards ahead of me when I was around 60 miles north of Memphis. To be fair, the rain was so dense I could barely see it.

Born in another time, I would have been with Lewis and Clark. I'm sure of that. As a teen, I ignored drugs despite growing up in the 1950s and 1960s. I spent my weekends outdoors. I would leave the house on Friday and come back Sunday night. Mom would always ask if I needed any food and I always said no. Lived off the land when I was out there. All I needed was a small bedroll and my dog.

Treasure was always on my mind and when I got my first detector, it came along despite the heft. I grew up in a Colonial area of Connecticut. Still quite countrified, it provided me with hours of possibilities every day. Later in life, while in the US Military, I would fish, hunt and hike to places that I simply cannot go today. My weekends were much the same but I took my children along when they were willing - which was most of the time. They grew up to be self sufficient, decent human beings for the experiences. Along the trail, I met some rather famous and infamous treasure hunters, sharing camps, campfires and tales with them.

Those times are memories now but oh, the stories I tell at campfires these days. Even if the campfire is in my back yard. All I need is my bottle of rum and a fine cigar these days. It never takes much to get me started. And then, out comes the special box of my most treasured items. Life is good.

You can't buy times like that GD, The memories become treasures them selves, and with many a Kid the Games Consul has stolen that from them, I look at the youth of today in disbelief,

Oh, dear God, I actually uttered the word TREASURE here. How dare I? I forgot that this web site is not dedicated to treasure hunting at all. Instead it is dedicated to Karl and anything BUT treasure.
