Whatever became of the rotary engine which was supposed to be so terrific for mileage?

I heard that there were problems with the apex seals in the rotary engines, could be one of the reasons why it did not takeoff.

Well the RX8 has the rotary engine in it and is still in use. Was a good idea to make them engines.

I think it had a lot less moving parts in them. And X you're right about the seals however with new technology the seals would be better by now, I just wish they would quit with the darn computer junk on the cars and sensors so we could see 50-60 mpg back again on the small diesel cars there is no reason there can't be. The (Mother-earth News) car gets around 90-104 mpg with the Kabota tractor engine in it so with all the brains we got here in USA and Europe there could be a good mileage car again. The paper and plastic car that was to come out of Africa wonder what went with that one??  shortribs

I have to agree with you about all the electronics in cars being a pain, jump start some of them and you're good to change the on board computer box ............Ouch. When I was in the Czech republic  in 1980 (still under the communist regime) I saw a car that had been made out of ply wood, panels would be formed with steam and left in the former's till they retained there shape. The panels were then glued together, unfortunately wood is very heavy. Some of the Renault's have plastic fenders, doors, roof, and hood are still steel just too bad that carbon fiber is so expensive, I'd like to live at the coast again but rust is a problem.

Yes!  It was the Wankel!  javascript:void(0);   I couldn't remember the name of it.  Mazda tried selling them in the U.S. in the late '70's or so, but they just didn't catch on!
