Hi Ironman - am new to this site - have you ever tried walking along a stone fence line with a long handled magnet or metal detector - if so how did you make out - so far in Ontario no luck - Bob T.

Bob, I didn't see this when you first posted it. Being from New England (Connecticut) I managed to walk a good number of miles along side some beautiful stone walls. You could always tell the native stone from the stuff that was not supposed to be there. Glacial deposits made the area I grew up in a very rocky place. I suppose if you hung a magnet on a one or two yard long dowel, it might be attracted to metallic stones. Both nickel and iron would then be identified quickly but the appearance would be the first clue. The magnet hanging down allows you to move it close to the suspect rocks.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
