If in fact the gold came from the Quartz, you have a good chance of finding a stinger or two.

I'm happy to find quartz and the like. Call me crazy but they make for good house objects..

Denizen - I brought home some quartz that to me is down right beautiful.  I would not call it extraordinary or a museum piece, but very unique.  I wish I could get some of the boulders home.  To think how they broke loose from the main lode, washed into the rivers and made it as far as they did from their place of origin, now sitting there rounded and smoothed by the forces of nature....

Also I'm thinking about getting a microscope and looking at crushed samples.

"It turns out the cure for gold fever, at least for Cooper, is in enjoying the search as much as the find."

That is absolutely true in my case.  I love the hunt as much as I do the find.  It's a great hobby and a great way to spend time in the beautiful mountains here in Idaho.  I thought I was out in the wilderness, which I am, and mostly I'm alone, but....  A lady looking alot like Calamity Jane rode thru on her horse one day trailed by another pack-horse and asked me what I was doing.  Another time a huge herd of sheep came thru followed by their Vaquero and several horses (he was packing a Winchester long rifle in a scabbard).  Then last week I heard a wolf howl nearby that sent a chill up the back of my neck.  I pack a 6 shooter myself for such reasons.  Every now and then I run across another prospector and we swap lies.  One told me that the definition of a "Mine" was a hole in the ground with a liar in it...ha!  What fun and memories.

Wait.. there's a giant piece of quartz clustered up there?! Quartz is really pricy these days. Which is surprising considering Silica Dioxide is everywhere, and a lot of the being quartz crystals.

It's getting so you can't go anywhere without running into folks up in the hills. I still have a couple hidey spots but I gotta work to get there. You are right though it's a great place to explore and I can't really blame them. I found a wolf jaw yesterday up near Silver City, still had some fuzz on it. I snagged a canine for a friend who likes to put em on bead necklaces. Kinda bugs me that they have spread that far south. I still say we should reintroduce a pack in central park NY and see how they like em there.

There is tons of quartz rock up there, but true quartz crystals are a lot less common. Many of the gold veins in that area travel through the quartz so you never know.

Somewhere I have a picture of about a 20 foot boulder in a mine up at Silver City. I love the stuff too, it's just pretty in any stage and looks good around the pond in my back yard. Camp Carson mine in Oregon has an amazing field of watermelon sized quartz boulders.

Everytime I pick a rock out of a pan I have to look to see what's in it. Someday might be something good! Smiley

I've crushed some up on several occasions and got some gold out, but it's a lotta work. I keep thinking about building a little stamp mill but my project list is pretty long... course if the price keeps rising I might bump it up the list  Grin

That's a good definition for a mine, I'm gonna remember that one! Grin

I don't know if what I'm seeing is true, pure, quartz.  Probably not.  Probably not collector's grade.  I'll put up some pics later.

Man!  You guys are really making me want to get back up in the hills and look for more quartz and gold.  Unfortunately,  I broke my heel pretty badly around the end of June and I still can't put weight on it...  maybe for another month and a half or so.    I can't ven get out with my detector yet, not even to a local park!   Angry  There will always be next year!

Idaho - I'm probably going to have to go up to Camp Carson again, next chance I get.   Detecting

I'd love to do that OK, but the doc frowns on it pretty severely!  I told doc I was riding my Harley-D to Reno in September for Street Vibrations.  I was told, "Absolutely Not!"  Unless I don' t mind having trouble with it the rest of my life!  Thumbs Down  But, I thank you for the suggestion...  I might have to think about it...   . Shame    Wise   Nice pics of the quartz, I'm assuming from Idaho.
