Well, not knowing exactly what happened - just because he left, wouldn't necessarily mean he didn't die in Arizona - whomever it was.  Violent No no!

Hello All

Loke researching information some times you hit nothing and then bang you hit paydirt.

Oroblanco the Tom Kollenborn article on the lost Wagoner ledge is very interesting in detail. Did he ever mention his sources. The John Wagoner seems like a strong contender for the wagoner of the treasure legend.

Mrs O, What can I say! Well done with the documents you found. One of them could well be the Wagoner of the wagoner legend? I love looking at old documents as you can learn many things from them. What amazes me on the death certificates reminds me of the amount of TB back then?

And it is possible that Fred Mullin thought Wagoner left Arizona?. He might not of known Wagoner personally? Which by not seeing him again he assumed Wagoner left Arizona? Wagoner could of lived out his life in a nearby town as never seen again by Mullin?

Gee this post is getting very interesting well done! certainly putting some meat onto the Legend.

Now just to clarify things for my tired old brain. What is the oldest version of the this legend?

Beth, I don't know where (or how) you dig them up (well, *chuckles*, not literally!) but I could easily put my money on the middle one - Joseph!
His age (1865-1909) seems about right, he is recorded as a 'miner' from Ill(inois), and he died of tuberculosis!!
And now we have the father and mother as well!! Thank you!

I'm not 100% sure of the very first version - but, and I'm using just plain memory - which fails me more than I'd like to say - but, it seems the first version I heard was that a man named Wagoner used to take the stagecoach from the town of Pinal, loaded  with rose-quartz gold ore, (supposedly from the Supes, but who knows) travel up Whitlow, Randolph and Red Tank Canyons, down LaBarge and then up to Pichacho Peak, and that one day he got off the stage and didn't come back.

Hello Mrs O

I wonder if there is some early 20Th century newspaper articles? If we can a better more verifiable a date that we could perhaps cross reference with one of those very interesting Wagoners you found?

Hardluck,

I'm looking - I'm sure there was something that started us off the the Wagoner legend years ago - bc - before computers - but I haven't found anything yet.  Undecided

We used to go to the libraries!!   Cheesy

Hardluck, I just re-checked and Tom K. did not include his sources.  As a local historian he has access to quite a library though so may have info that we cannot get access to.

I don't know the oldest (date) version of the story either, think that an old Desert magazine article might be the oldest.  Barry Storm did an article for Desert in the Feb 1945 issue that I am referring to but I am pretty sure there are older accounts in old newspapers.  Still looking, have more on this here somewhere... Idea

Hello All

Oroblanco that coffee is looking good even if is virtual Coffee Coffee Coffee Cheesy

A story version of the Wasgoner might of appeared in the mid 1930's in a series of articles called "Golden Phantoms" Facinating tales of lost mines by Edithe L Watson. It might be worth trying to hunt those articles down?

Hardluck I think you are right and I may have her article here (somewhere) if I can locate it I will post it.

I am a confirmed coffee addict, can't imagine getting through a day and night without the caffiene-jolt!

Have a rather busy week ahead, won't be home much so if you don't see anything from me for a week nothing is wrong just can't get online.  But I will see what I can find of the Golden Phantoms!  Good luck and good hunting amigos I hope you find the treasures that you seek.
