Missouri cave slowly reveals its Ice Age fossil treasures
Found by chance in 2001 after being sealed for eons, the 2,000-foot site is a time capsule

By MARCUS KABEL
Associated Press

SPRINGFIELD, MO. ? The bear that left a 3-foot-long claw mark in an Ice Age clay bank was the largest bear species ever to walk the earth, about 6 feet tall at the shoulder and capable of moving its 1,800 pounds up to 45 mph in a snarling dash for prey.. . . .

Picture of the bear claw marks shown in this story:

SAY!
SUE:
Are you sure of those measurements?
A good size KODAK Bear, on the Island of Kodak,
Today, would measure that, 6', at the HIPS!  Shocked
AND!
He's a Pipp Squeak compared to The Prehistoric CAVE BEAR !

Cptbil, Not personally sure - must have used the claw marks to come up with that guesstimate as it doesn't say they found bear skeleton. You know how those archaelogists are. Sue

Sue:

Thanks for the info. I had not heard about this discovery until you posted it. I wasn't all that surprised since Missouri is full of caves- some of them containing hidden treasure. It is ironic it was discovered on an infamous date.

Have you been to this website? It tells about some of those treasures in the caves of Missouri - plus treasure in some other states, too. Sue

Yes- I am well aware of the treasures having been buried or hidden in caves. Whether or not there any more recoverable ones remain to be seen. Missouri is an outdoor paradise with lots of small rivers, caves, etc. When I was a kid- we used to float the rivers and anytime we saw a cave in a bluff or anywhere we would always  stop and explore it. Repeat this thousands of times throughout the years with different people throughout the state  and I just have to think the chances of anyone finding a cache in a cave are pretty slim. If there's one out there- it would have to be waaaaaaaaay off the beaten path.

I do really like this website alot. You all seem (in my own opinion) slightly friendlier here. The fact that I'm a 24 (as of tomorrow!) year old college student seems to bring a good amount of objection to whatever I say. I mean, I'm still researching and learning like everyone else and wouldn't dare discount what someone else says in a critical manner on an area that I'm not completely familiar with... *shrugs*

Thanx Sweet Sue for the warm welcome! Yes ma'am, I have heard about that cave. It's here in Springfield, though I haven't been able to trek out to the spot it's at just to have an idea of the surrounding area to it. Maybe when I have more free time after my graduate school module class is over this week. And what's your comment about Archaeologist's supposed to mean? *grin* "You know how those archaeologists are." Ha, ha... I used to be apart of an Archaeological group back home in Florida for about 5 years back when I was in high school.
Oh, I'm actually subscribed to Floyd Mann's newsletter (

Sadly enough, Floyd's newsletter is the highlight of my week while I'm up here at college. I get so excited seeing and reading all the information he provides on great finds and other THing info!
And in regards to the Crater of Diamonds State Park over in Arkansas, I am very well aware of the park!!! It's approximately 6 hours and 26 minutes from here in Springfield. lol! I found out about the place about a year and a half ago and have been eager to get out there since. School and work are the two biggest hindrances for me as of right now, but I know I'll get out there sometime soon.  Grin
I've also been to that website for the State Treasures before... I have a binder with printed material on treasure info, cache's, and relics for both Missouri and Florida, along with alot of saved electronic files of articles and maps saved onto my computer that I've archived as well over the years.
Sorry for the long post, I just thought I'd reply to everything all at once. Efficiency at it's finest. Heh, heh!  Grin

Happy Birthday, Bran! May the 24th be a great year for you - your best yet!

Thunting doesn't have much to do with age, I don't think. All it takes is the desire to seek flowing through your veins. With the data you've compiled, it sounds like you are on par with everyone as research is the key. I started a major in archaeology in college myself, but discovered I lacked the patience.<smile> My "you know" comment was in regards to how they can easily fabricate a whole scenario based on one itsy tidbit. I enjoy receiving Floyd Mann's newsletter, too. Again, welcome to thunting.com and have a wonderful b'day. Sue

Thanx Sweet Sue! Smiley I've definitely got a strong passion for researching and reading articles regarding THing and Archaeology. THing is at least 90% research anyway...  Wink I understand what you're saying though as far as Archaeologist's fabricating historical facts and other information based on a such a small bit of info. That always used to bother me when I was working with CGCAS back home. Again, you're right though... Archaeology definitely takes patience, which I've always had plenty to spare. Well I'm off to my next class, have a great day... and thanks again!!!  Grin
