Went looking for Spanish Trail Markers. I found this stone carving.
{alt}

It pointed to more markers, and I kept walking around in circles. Any idea what this means?
{alt}

I dug down and at about 6 inches I found leaves, rocks, and a strange black mat that looked to be a vapor shield. I was afraid of hitting water. Do you think I should keep digging?
{alt}

This is how it gets started. These pages are for fun and information. Keep digging, but be safe please.

The ritual of youth riding the flying turtles is an ancient and endearing one. Originally they were primarily made of green plastic but vandilsim ensued and so they were cast in concrete. When employed the young riders would all form a semicircle and point to some centre point. The center point was often occupied by idividuals to whom the youth riders depended on. Digging beyond the black layer is ill advised as you may reach the water table flooding the entire archeololgic site and denying future historians the benefit of more information on the fabled "Youth Riders of the Flying Turtles".

Where are they located or are you just pulling two symbols out of the air?

 I was just interested in your opinion on the meaning of these markers. Located in areas
 of old spanish activity.

Heart = Treasure entrance or / treasure inside tunnel or, if it has a round hole in it = treasure is here. This only applies to hearts with no zig-zag lines going through it. Those are the dangerous ones and are booby trapped.
Tortoise =  This one has much more to say. Is the tortoise walking?  You will know as its legs will be sticking out; move in direction of head, you are not at the end of journey.  If its lying down; you're home and dry. Where to dig?  Look at legs or, if its a turtle look at fins.  At times you may find a turtle/tortoise with one leg/fin sticking out - this one's at rest. Longest leg is usually indicator. Head only; continue in direction  head is pointing.  From my handy book of signs

Heart points towards home and turtle means proceed with caution.

Guys, I was just having a laugh. I didn't write the symbols. I'm not quite that old so I really don't know what the person who put a heart or turtle really meant or if there is even such a symbol anywhere. You guys just really aren't getting this Spanish symbol stuff, are you? There really and truly are books full of suggestions, not rules, for what they might mean. Nobody really knows but there is one thing for certain. They are directional markers for important Spanish landmarks, not treasure.
