The direction indicator has a box on the end were sometimes lines are drawn to note number of days. A box has four sides, so four days. The triad is the next eye catcher. Use it to find the triangle markers. The sighting quad riser together with a Spanish protractor (a miners compass), marked on the ground to scale, is used to make sightings to the deposit. You can make a replica of what you see in the picture and set it up in your yard to see what the sun shadow does on the protractor. Of course you would have to set up the same rig at the right place at the deposit location to have it work.
Spanish Miners Compass Wheel:
'Now divide each quarter of the earth into six divisions; and by this method apportion the earth into twenty-four directions, which divide into two parts of twelve each.'
This is just a compass face with 15 degree lines. It is numbered north 12, south 12, west 6, east 6. You use it just like a modern bearing compass is used.
IE; N8W
In some cases they used Latin names instead of numbers to record the location numbers. These where like what the sailors used, the four principal winds and four cardinal points. There are also twenty subordinate winds. Taking noon sun readings is very accurate. They also used a rolling wheel of the right diameter to mark off lines on the ground.
They were very exact in locating their mining resources so that they could be found by the Kings representatives. They were in the Americas for about 400 years digging my gold, much of it is still here.

Four days sounds like a long distance, but is most likely not. In rough country making 2-3 miles per hour is good time. On the other hand, a conditioned man can do 50 miles a day for a few days on a good trail.
