I realize this is an old post but, here's what I think:
The chruch cross above the half circle means, the treasure is buried at or near a mission.
The arrow points either to the next symbol down the hill or the direction to the mission.
The 3 vertical lines means, a dry creek, stream or riverbed to be crossed and then continue in the same direction.
