Lots of you guys are so hooked on pinpointers that I ask myself where are you using these pinpointers . In my opinion a pinpointer is a piece of equipment to investgate holes in the rocks or wells or any spot too large to use a regular coil . Another use may be to get as close to your target ( once detected by using your regular coil ) as possible , not to disturb a large area of soil . In my opinion , by using the smallest coil possible you would have a pinpointer . The smallest coil possible would be a ferrite coil rod with a  cu wire coil wound on it . The ferrite rod is not bigger than 3/4 of an inch ( diameter ) . How small can you get ?   The only thing you have to do is working with any PI detector and you got it made . You can use any shape coil with this set up .  Cornelius

Cornelius, thanks for the reminder. You had posted this solution in it's entirety on another forum. If you could post it here, it would be very helpful to many of us. Though I have no electronics background, I may be able to figure it out. Thanks again.

Pete

I think the Periscope is the best one. Why? Well first of all in normal hunting conditions you can push it into the ground up to 14" before digging. If you are off target, you simply switch to max. sensitivity and turn it until the signal is strongest and check the arrow on the top of the handle, remove the probe rod and reinsert it a half inch or so in the direction the arrow indicates until you recieve an abrupt increase in pitch and then dig your target.
second, as long as you do not use it as a prybar it will last virtually forever since it has a titanium tip. It discriminates too between iron and non-iron targets. I have owned mine for 10 years now. I paid a pretty penny for it but it has paid for itself in finds in the first year of use and it has been all profit ever since. Since it shortens recovery time, you end up finding more per hour searched.

The best pin pointer is the best for your type of hunting. I only need to check surface items on most mowed areas . In parks, the 22 cases mask a lot of targets. they are duck soup with the Garrett. Fields, I get a signal and turn over a spade full of dirt.Usually the detector can isolate the items hiding place. Having the ability to shove  a probe into the ground is a definate plus to have..However, the Garrett will work for the majority of instances  that I put it in play..For 49 years I didn't have any sort of pin pointer. For the next 50, I intend to use one, Cordially Nad Smiley Detecting

The garrett pro pointer,I think is the best all around pinpointer. It has a holster for your belt A built in led light for low light areas. It vibrates and gets louder the closer you get to your target.

I never used a pin pointer before. I now have two new ones. Both are the Automax Precision V4. I played with it a little and it seems it will pick up a coin at about two inches on the table top, that is if you adjust the sensitivity at a point to where it is halfway sqweeling at you already. Anything less it will not pick a coin up unless it is about a 1/2-3/4 inch away.  It is bulky I think. It does have a belt hook something like a tape measure does and it does have a tone and vibrate switch. It is custom manufactured special for Kellyco.  I got one free with a purchase of a detector and the other I it came along with a special deal on a bonus package of things for 20 bucks I think. I am not sure if it will come in handy for me or not. I might use it if I am diging a deep hole where the metal detector cannot reach. The instruments prob is 9 inches long. Total length is 18 inches.

How deep are these pin pointers suppose to detect something anyway? As far as I can see is as far as you can dig plus two inches or less.

Depending which model ( + soil conditions ) you buy depth can vary. My Garrett Propointer will go about 3"-3-1/2" which is all I'm looking for. Some people say theirs will go deeper but thats what I bought a metal detector for. I use my detector to give me a good idea to where and what depth a target is at then run the propointer over the surface without digging to see if it picks it up. Found alot of surface finds doing that without digging.

I had an Automax Pinpointer and the wiring in the battery area became disconnected after about a month.  I say don't waste your money on it. I am saving up for a Garret.
