usmcman; Have you given the Harbor Freight metal detector a good workout yet.How has it done for you? I ordered one a few years ago, but they were out of stock so canceled. Have always wondered how they preform.

I have had it out on two outings and both times came up with "stuff". LOL anyway it appears to be a decent model for the price. I have found stuff at about 7" deep so far. I am still trying to get to the cornfield and the creek I was talking about. It has been a very rainy season here in Illinois and still lots of debris from the ice storm that hit us in January. I will keep everyone posted though. Thanks for asking.

I have also had good luck with the HF pinpointers.  Bought two last year. One for me and the Wife.  I did have to re-solder the wires to the push button switch but other than that they both are still working fine after many hours of use.  1 to 1 1/2 inches depth is typical.

Thanks Jerry, welcome to the forum.
I think I am convinced, its a lot better than my ...Sherlock probe...  So apart from the build quality and loose end stopper which I can check out and resolve, I think I will get one, I do like a bargain.

All the best Mike.

Hi Mike

About the only down side I can see is the local store did not have them in stock and I had to order and it took about a month to get.

Thanks for the welcome

Jerry

Go Up Go Down

Hello All,
Well I kept looking at the harbor frieght metal detector the one that lists for 49.00
and on Thursday my gf went and got one for me as a present. And Yesterday I went Grays Harbor ( the ocean ) to give it a test. Its basically a discrimanitor type detector, which I found to work rather well. Its pretty simple to operate. I actually found several tin cans buried in the sand at various depths. and a bic metal lighter cover ( with the lighter still inside that still works! ( it hadnt been in the sand to long maybe a day or so, but never the less I found it! Funny. For the interesting part I dig everything cuz one never knows!, the one tin can i dug up was about five inches down, when I pulled the can out, I rescanned the whole, and got no signal, but I seen a corner of an unknown object, So I dug it out. Now what has me going the object is 5 inches long and aprox 1.5 inches in depth and made of wood. it has a heavy staining on one side that goes almost all the way through the wood.and it is slanted on one side as if to fit against another piece of wood. Could this peice of old wood be part of an old wreckage? I will post pics later of this. even if its not to me its still a neat find!!!!. So in my opinion the harbor frieght detector dose work and would be a good detector for a beginner or even a spare. and Im sure the tech people here on the forum could make it even better with there Knowledge of eletronics.
Best Wishes to All & and Happy Hunting ( tis the Season! ) ,,,,,,,,,,Rob
