If you go to Kellyco metal detectors they have a lot of affordable detectors.I bought a MP series and am quite happy its not my dream detector but perfoms well.  Most any detector can pay for itself it just depends on how much time you are willing to spend hunting. The odds are good you are going to find between 1 and 50 coins a day and depending on their value it could be a couple dollars or more. But one nice ring or something along that line will up the total quickly.

Depends on your interests. I'm very happy as an urban searcher. I look in the tot lots, schools, and parks. My Ace 250, Tesoro Silver umax, and BH Tracker meet my needs perfectly. As far as the depth on the Ace, I have to keep the sensitivity DOWN to keep it from picking up the large metal objects or overreacting to them. I used to be serious about my hunting, but got tired of digging zincers and modern coins at 8-10". Most rings are within the first 4", as well as coins and I've found that the high powered machines overact to the trash in the areas I search. With my time schedule, I find tremendous amounts of coinage per trip by concentrating on the first 4" or so. Here are pics, first from my Ace, then my Silver umax, and finally my Walmart version of the BH Tracker:

Hi Bud
I agree with you about getting the best detector from the start , Back in the 80s I got my first detector Garretts TR/VLF Deepseeker  still got it cost me $700 bucks . I never seem to do much good with it there were no Internet to go to and information was non existant , so I lost interest     Then 18 months ago I got the bug again This time I got a $300 dollar Bounty Hunter IV great little detector for the price , but the internet has helped me a lot to understand how to use a detector and with technology moving ahead so fast I am more acknowledgeable thanks to you guys . I am ready to leap ahead with and spend serious money for a coin and relic hunter , I already own a GP Extreme .
I think  if El Oro has the  willpower and energy to stick with -it and keep in contact with this forum , ( because you never stop learning new tricks every day ) he will find this is a very interesting and rewarding hobby . It is a steep learnig curve to learn you detector at first but you will apprieciate a quality machine , without thoughts of  what youve missed finding , with a cheap detector,  as it has taken me years to discover.     Maybe he could hire a couple of different brands of detectors to get the feel of them before he spends any money ?

Hey Aussie,

Rental yards sometimes have detectors but the ones I have seen are low end machines, for the most part.

It would be advantageous to join a local club. I am sure Oro could find members who would help by showing their machine or instructions, showing pluses and minuses. Too bad he doesn't live within driving distance of me. I have an Explorer XS (perfect cond.) with lots of goodies, I am putting on consignment next week.

Hello Everyone . In the U.S.A. , we can check Ebay which is always overpriced !! Or do what I do , check craigslist.org everyday . Which has some great "USED" Metal Detectors at fantastic prices !! Not always , but at least once or twice a month is a deal you can't live without !!

Here are some examples of what I see on craigslist's [used metal] detector's , these one's are great for beginners :

1. Discovery 1000 or 1100   =$40 to $50 Dollars
2. Discovery 2000 or 2200   =$50 Dollars to $80 Dollars
3. Discovery 3000 or 3300   =$90 Dollars to $140 Dollars
4. Garrett Ace 150              =$80 Dollars
5. Garrett Ace 250              =$150 Dollars

Anyone else can add to this list !!!

 Great.............. Wise.............Eugene52

I have to agree about the Minelab.  If you get the best at the beginning you won't buy multiple machines trying to figure out which one is best.  I have three detectors and the Minelab is the best of the three.  My only complaint is its weight. My 70 year old arm gets tired much quicker that it used to and I'm thinking about something lighter.  But nevertheless the depth and accuracy of the digital readouts can't be beat on the Minelab.

Hey Budlang,

Please Register or Login

www.docsdetecting.com
or call 1-800-477-3211 ext 14.

Doc makes the Swingy Thingy. It is a harness that will take ALL the pain out of swinging a detector. I have been using one for years on my Explorers. Make sure you specify the NEW model. It has an improved adjuster. Make sure, if you use a SunRay pinpointer, you place the shaft clamp below the pinpointer box in such a way as not to crimp the cord........You will thank me later.

Bud
