The Garretts are good, many others too, whatever you get=I always remember what Charles Garrett says, and in all his manuals too I think= no matter what you have  take 100 hours to learn it=how to make it work productive-whatever you get give it and yourself a chance to learn the detector and what it is trying to tell you  Amen

I recommend the Garrett Ace250 also as a starter machine.

In my opinion if your serious about this hobby and plan on doing it for awhile i would buy right at the start a middle class machine.
I had the Ace for a year and a half and it is a good starter machine,but when i went out i always had the feeling i was missing somthing.
The ace is a good coin shooter and if what your looking for is not that far from the surface then its ok,but if your looking for relics that can be +8" and more
then the Ace is not the best machine.After the Ace i bought the Minelab xterra70 with the 10"DD 7,5khz coil.Its just as easy to use as the Ace,but has more power,but it also depends on your wallet.If i could do it again i would buy my Xterra as a starter machine so i wouldn?t have to search all those areas again that i did with the Ace.Well thats my two cents.Hope it helped.

Jeff..

That's the problem sometimes when you buy anything for a hobby. You'll never know if you will be serious or not until you get out in the field and do it. I would rather start slow and have a small budget then go all out with a big budget-then find out you don't like it.

@Goldfinger

Thats what i thought to when i started,but as you know when this hobby has ist claws into you its hard to let go.
Also as with the Ace,a good middle class machine would not be hard to get rid of if he decided this hobby was not for him.
I just think its better to invest in a better machine at the start then after a year or so buying another one
Just my opinion.
