Go Up Go Down

Let me start out by saying that several companies make great digging knives, trowels or whatever you want to call them and I am not trying to take anything away from them.  The fact is everyone can't afford and some newbies don't want to spend $40-$70 dollars for those items.  I think I have a solution.  This is a little item I picked up at the Walmart Garden section a few days ago.  It is strong and well built.  Simple, comes with a blade that you can saw with on one side and if you do a little sharpening you can cut with the other side and I really like the split end blade that will cut right through small roots and vines.  This item is 12" long and 2" wide at the biggest width of the blade.  It has a comfortable rubberized handle and is made by Fiskars.  The clear plastic cover is a bit cheapish but you can hang it on your side by the handle.  Now here is the great part.  $7 at Wally World.  Will it do the job?  I think so and I certainly going to gamble the $7 to see.

It certainly looks great - price is right. Worth a try IMHO.

In years past I used alla the types of garden diggers, made by many folk, and for this ol' guy they didn' hold up too well, I switched over to Lesche/Predator, 5-6 years ago and have had no more bent or broken tools, the garden tools are OK if you only detect for mebbe a year or so, sometimes less, sometimes more, but if you are really into it, they will let you down, usually when you really need them, but then again I only discovered the internet and started posting and finding things out 5 or 6 yr back, but been a detecting since bout 1975.
Anyway that's my opinion , and they work purty good for the money= shucks go for it Wise

The only garden digging tool that I've seen hold up to the abuse of digging in caliche and hacking through mesquite roots is the Ames (discussed on a few other threads).   It definitely is NOT a lightweight.   The only problem I have with it is that it doesn't keep quite as sharp of an edge as I would like for as long as I would like.

Hi,

I had this same tool from Fiskars.  It was great for a little while but did not hold up.  Indeed I was trying to use it loosen an object from the ground by prying on it.  Probably not how it was intended to be used.

The connection between the handle and the blade is very poor (the part covered by the plastic handle) and it broke right above the blade.  I bought an old garden shovel later at a garage sale that I could visibly see the construction and still using it.

Gosh fellows, just bust my bubble.  I'll see how it does.  I can always give it to the wife to do flowers with.  Seriously I appreciate the feedback.

Home Depot sells a simular version for $10 bucks I have not been able to break yet, and its showing no signs of weakining. Its a green handle devil called ames. I also picked up a composite trowel for waving dirt over my coil when searching nuggets or multiple small targets in a hole. The plastic trowel was a buck.

I may reward myself with a professional tool once I get there, but for now I am a rookie and will do my best to dig proper holes, a sharp digging tool is a must.

As bitburg said, I have mesquite and caliche every where, and I doubt anything will hold up long in that.
