Sound like good idea to have good back-up plan. Or partner.

Here in Oregon there are quite a few state parks that allow metal detecting with a permit that you can get at the ranger stations or park authorities.

A lot of the city parks here allow metal detecting, but no digging    Undecided  Undecided  Undecided

Ah well.. they said it's ok to keep any surface finds and stuff I find in the sand or rocks on the river banks.

Metal detecting without digging of any kind... including probes.  What is the world coming to  Sad

My park experiences have unfortunately been the same as yours.  The playgrounds aren't sand like they were when we were kids.  A lot of them are now covered with not just wood chips, but RUBBER chips!  That stuff is IMPOSSIBLE to dig in!  When I go to those types of places I often end up detecting under the larger trees, where kids climb and drop stuff out of their pockets.

Hello
In my County of Pasco we are not allowed in 99 percent of the parks.
One nice beach area lets you in one hour after opening and one hour before close.
We have so much history with Spanards and pirates in this part of florida, but it seems the Blue Bloods would rather see it rot in the ground than let a regular person find it.

Yes indeed, ask about a park if you are not sure. I went to a park I used to play at when I was little, I recently went back there to detect. The park had a neat old well coming out of the hill. A city official pulled up YELLING at me! Seems I was digging up the grounds of a historical park, the well was built around 1772 by David Zeisberger a Moravian missionary for the indians here in Ohio.....ooooops!!!!! I almost landed my butt in jail! The park was in no way marked as historical, I had no idea, so be careful! Wink

No fair!  Historical places should be clearly marked as such! Sad

I do not know about other places, but I started
cleaning out all the tot lots with in 50 miles of
my place two years ago.

They were never hunted very well.... I did well
for a good while just doing that.

I learned so much stuff that, I have carried that
info to every where I hunt.

So far, The finds seem to keep coming, on and
off.

Some times it just floors me..... I do not know
where it comes from. It happens in weard ways.

For instance,

I was hunting a tot lot that I have cleaned out
and re-visited several times. It has shreaded
tires.

I got a signal that was like a spike that they
use to hold the under fabric down. It was also
under the bottom of the slide. It was close to
the metal legs.

I do not know why I dug it, the shreaded tires
were piled up under the slide. I was wondering
why I was doing such a foolish thing.

Then, at about 10 inches, I fished out a 22.6
gram, 14k yellow gold bracelet Shocked

How can I make sense of that.

I still feal high after a couple of months.

The question is, why did that happen?

I do not know. I do not understand.

The only thing I can think of is that I do this
about 5 days a week.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

I'm not lucky enough to have 5 days a week like Tabdog to devote to hunting, so I spend time during the work week plotting out my next search, or analyzing the most recent ones.
Last weekend I searched a school that has 3 totlots.  One lot produced clad coins and a silver earring, while the others had nadda.  So I'm trying to figure out the difference between the two, visualize why kids & parents pick one over the other, and what makes one lot more productive... Huh?

Yeah, park pickings have really slimmed down.

It must be the economy; everyone is staying home.

I'm spending more in gas then I'm finding. The only up side to this is the exercise I get in the process.
