:-\I was under the impression that the better metal detectors could pick out a coin in a bucket of nails, is that right or wrong?

Well, IF the bucket was plastic, HAHA. Now take that same scenerio and put it into real world condtions a couple of nails surrounding a coin, yes.  My gold bug can. Change your scenerio to a bunch of pull tabs surrounding a coin and I say no way to nickles and maybe to dimes and quarters.

Do they really show the difference from gold to say a nail or a penny? I'm new at this stuff and was trying to figure out the best one to buy for finding gold in and arround creeks or rivers. Are the really expencive ones worth it?

jt280z,

I was looking for a gold-specific model.  Those start out at $499.  ANY detector will find gold, but some detectors are built to increase your chance of success.  I have a $100 detector that the manufacturer touts will work in the gold fields under extreme ground balance conditions.  Really?  Then I have the $500 Gold Bug that was built specific to find gold.  But since I ain't never been gold nugget huntin, I'll pass the ball to Bittyburg or GoldDigger or homefire, or some of those who have actually done it.
Will they show the difference between gold or a nail or a penny?  Yes and no.  They have a hard time telling between a pull tab and a small gold ring, but they are good at telling a nail from a dime.  Mine can't tell if its a dime or a coke can.  The lines are still blurred thats why there are those among us who still dig every signal, no matter what.

We're coin n jewelry hunters and dig everything except iron.  Great Great

There are ways to get around the coke can.
Like when your in PP mode raise coil off the ground 6-9 inches
if it's still a strong signal it's a coke can.  Sad Sad
If the sound disappears within 2-4 inches it's a small target.  Wise Wise

Or ya can PP the length of target and say
there's not a coin ever been made that wide. No no! No no!

Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight Fight

Yeah, except my BH and a quater tricked me today.  I said there ain't no coins that big, its a can.  And it was a quarter.  Score!  My BH doesn't have a PP so I X and circle and criss cross.

I found a coin spill just last week that when pinpointed was about 20 inches long. Luckily for me it was just inside the grass basically on the surface.

In some of my machines, the ferrous targets have a sort of softer beep with silence before and after the target. For non ferrous, the beep starts out tiny, increases and then goes back to tiny. It's hard to describe in words but I can hear the difference and am seldom wrong. The proof is always in the digging of the target and even when I know absolutely that a target is a nail, I still dig it. The difference is that I sweep the soil with a magnet first to speed up the recovery. For non ferrous, I don't do that.

I'll be darned.  I'm gonna learn something new every day hangin around you guys.  I was just in Harbor Frieght over the weekend and I picked up a big magnet on the end of a stick and was playing with it while the wife watched (no comments).  But I didn't buy it.

A coin spill conjours images of some poor bloak stumbling and going face first into the dirt.  How else would you get a debri field of strewn coins?  Who knows.

nice thing about that telescoping magnet---it fits well in the back pocket while you're swinging the detector.  (and it stores well in the glove box or the door panel when you're not).   Got two of 'em so my wife can have her own.

A True Story:
A TH was seaching(metal detecting) an old man's front yard.......His detector beeped over a large rectangle in the dirt......he dug that up....and it was a piece of Roofing sheet metal........a little later he detected what he thought was another piece
of sheet metal......He did NOT dig that one up........Came back a week later the the land owner dug up a Wells Fargo Safe! Wise

So, Always dig! Angry
