Man...  This one is real touchy.. Friends can not be replaced and years of relationship building can be destroyed in just seconds over the GREED factor.  If I was rummaging thru some place that had a stash of cash (more than 50 dollars worth), then I'd be inclined to return it to the owners.   if they didn't care for it, then it's yours to do with what you want.  The point being, I'd not say anything until I had checked with the owners first, after that, a nice letter in the mail with a few bucks to your partners would be a great way to say " Glad your my friend, and BTW, this is what I found while we were searching X Place.  I wanted to check with the owners prior to getting your hopes up of coming into some cash"..  I'm sure they would understand..  Your looking out for everyone's best interest at that point.  That shows respect for the owner, caring for the friend, and good will to all...  Just my 2 cents on the subject.

I agree with BA.  Great   He has it laid out pretty squarely.  If I'm on a hunt with another person, if he finds a gold coin and I find a nail, do I feel he should share the value of the gold coin with me?  NO!  That is his find!  If I find the gold coin and he finds nothing am I obligated to give him some of the value of the coin?  No way.  Individual finds belong to the individuals...  unless some prior arrangement and agreement was made.  Then you follow the agreement!         Detecting
