Hi Goldigger !

you are right, truffle pigs do exist. They are "easier to use" than dogs since they enjoy eating truffles (its a pity, truffles are almost expensive as gold nuggets :-) ) and can detect them without being trained - dogs require some training, but do not eat the precious fungus.

Being serious (hem...), my feeling is that some dogs could be trained to detect some metals and ores, but since I cannot have a dog I have to convince myself that the truth is in electronics and electrodynamics...

I am now thinking of detectors that could find truffles (densitometers ?). Never found a fungus with my Tejon. May be a matter of ground adjust.

Joe.

Why is it you can not have a dog?? I understand it is the Fox Terrier type that do well, as fungus finders.

Now if you can determine the compounds  released by the fungus... like, do they respire CO2, or any CHn compound (or CH4 derivitive,) you might create a design, using one of the many, common gas detectors..... its a thought.

I, personal opinion, can not see why a small dog could not be trained to find metals.... I can taste the difference between some metals, also, some smell different, but my nose and taste are nowhere near as sensitive as that of a pooch!

BUT! I  am not going to go out and acquire a pup, and get the cats all miffed at me! You have to respect the current denizens!

When it comes right down to it, you might train a pigeon to detect magnetic field differences, an aviaristic magnetometer!

Quite possibly.... or maybe I was already there?

It has to be 'carrier' pidgeon, they have been shown to have tiny bits of magnetite in their brains!

Now all we have to do is design a "TX-RX magnetometer". Maybe call it a "Pigeonometer" Grin

No batteries. The operating cost? Mere chickenfeed.
