Hi Lee,

Those are very nice coins, and good work on the cleaning.... The other coins you could maybe leave in some olive oil for a period... Sometimes this works wonders.

God bless
Peter

Hi lazooro, I wouldnt usually clean any coins using electrolysys but the coins pictured were so badly corroded they appeared to just be green discs with NO detail or dates to be seen. This was my first time using this method and think they are now identifiable they would of been worthless anyway so i think they have come up pretty good imho. obviously if it were a coin that was clearly identifiable with its patina i wouldnt dream of giving them this method of treatment and would just use soapy water. Cheers. HH  Lee   Detecting

Indeed.  What's disappointing is when one sees a very rare coin that was okay as-is, but was cleaned anyways.

Any thought about posting some "before" photos of those previously indiscernible disks?

Also, what's the chance you could post a photo or two of your electrolysis setup?

i think it is impossible to clean roman coins and coins with patina.
i tried with several coins and patina goes off every time.
i got some cool cleaned coins but value is not the same without patina.. but those good coins are very rare and you can get mostly those with patina relief...and if you remove that green stuff, you get ..you get  Violent

so clean it mechanically.. soft pins toothpicks..soaking sometimes also remove patina..so must be careful..
every coin has own cleaning method
good luck  Wise

CheetahCats here a picture of m electrolysis setup and a picture of a coin thats in pretty bad shape. But you can see a date the coins i had cleaned i couldnt even work out dates and were in worse shape than this 1867 farthing, I have managed to work out what it is with water and soap n a tooth brush but im sure you agree its in bad shape! When i use my electrolysis setup i fill the pint glass up with luke warm water add a half teaspoon of salt and a small pinch of citric acid (thats the small bag of white stuff) my red or positive end is connected to a stainless steel spoon and my negative or black end is connected to whatever item i am cleaning. Please do comment on if there is any problem with my setup as ive only done it a couple of times. Like i said before i wouldnt just do it to any old coin if detail can be seen and the coins that i did clean aint exactly valueable. When i next clean a few bits i will do the farthing pictured to show the results. Thanks all and HH. Lee  Detecting

I must admit I cringed a little when I saw that you're using an ac main rectifier for your dc source... but nonetheless, very clever, indeed.
