Hi all i made a home made electrolosys setup just to clean the thick tarnish on a few of my unrecognisable coins and have found some dates its unbeleiveable how it can clean it off! But i do understand that it could ruin any coins that might be worth money. So i hope i not ruined anything i doubt it in these conditions. There is also a coin that i can now see the outline of a head but cannot work out the age of coin so any ideas will be cool

Contrary to popular belief, a solid disk of corrosion is worthless. A coin with a discernible date is not. A dilemma arises when you know a coin is valuable but can't be sure unless you clean it. You've done as well as any expert could have done with coins that are a single mass of corrosion.

Do you have a SPINK guide? Coins of England & The United Kingdom, 43rd Edition, Standard Catalogue of British Coins. I find this guide invaluable when diagnosing and attributing specimens.

I havnt got any recent books or anything all i have is - seaby standard catalogue of british coins 30th edition 1995. lol so it a bit out of date! Now i use the internet but will look into a SPINK guide. Thanks mate Great

You're welcome. Here's a link I use when comparing specimens for authenticity. It may help too, but it's not necessarily organized by date or by planchet metal:

That said, based on the planchet size of the unknown specimen, you will most likely be able to infer whether it's a penny, halfpenny, farthing, etc. Though I can't tell its size by the photo, it looks to me like it's either a George II or George III halfpenny. The spacing and location of "I - A" on its reverse, and its proximity to what looks like seated Britannia, is an indicator to me.

Spink is a great book, similar to seaby but when pictures are different it can help identify coins, there is a 2009 copy on amazon, being sold by the detector shop Joan Allen for ?6 + ?2.75 postage - a bargain !!

Indeed, that is a great deal. Here in the states, I paid $30 USD for mine.
