Hi all

Here is a simple coil winder you can add a counter or even motorize it.

Regards Xavier

Nicely done! You could add one of those click counters that comes with those knitting machines everyone throws away when grandma dies. Then motorizing it wouldn't be so scary.

Hi GD

Thanks for looking
Got the click counter this morning as for a motor well still looking. I have a schematic of a PWM that will do just fine for this project I will also add a bobbin holder with a break (spring loaded) for the wire I'll see if I can't make an automatic wire guide (my vision is getting poor) and if all goes well why not a programmable counter?

Hi xavier, good stuff you're doing there, I like D.I.Y stuff myself. You could use a upside down bicycle to wind the coil and use the brakes on it? just a thought! Grampz ... newbie UK

Fishing poles use ceramic or graphite guides. That being said, a hole drilled in a small piece of Delrin(tm) would do the trick. Need a cheap source of Delrin(tm)? One of those plastic cutting boards from the thrift store will do. They're made from Delrin(tm).

Some old sewing machines here in the UK have a threaded bobbin feeder than goes one way and the other to wind thread on the bobbin evenly, I wonder if something like this could be used to wind a coil on in a similar way?

GD I have some Teflon that is self lubricating so should do the job quite nicely  Shocked I just noticed that on of my post went astray Ho well

Good one Grampz
Nice and small too thanks  I will look into that one and if I recall you could set it for different bobbin width too......Now where did she put that..

Hi Xavier, I'm an XL and allergic to nylon so the sweater should be wool thanks. Blue, navy blue. Great
Ok, excuse my ignorance but is the coil winder for a metal detector? If so surely one could just count the coils manually? I've just received a new coil for my Fisher 1236 X2 and got the old one back and wondering if it would be worth tweaking it apart to see the problem and maybe making a repair as a spare.
Also check my post on a possible gold mine project near Knysna.

Cheers,

Andrew Smiley

Hi Orcaman

Yes this coil winder is for winding coils for metal detectors see if you wind a coil by hand you end up with a jumble wound coil and as it is near if not impossible to wind a second coil in exactly the same way so you end up with a lot of coils all doing there own thing (change in inductance) in other words if you want the coils have the same characteristics you need a coil winder not to mention that they look a lot neater, they fit the way that they should and they come out nice and round. As for your coil you could try to open it but I think that the chance of you being able to fix it are slim and as I do not use commercially made detectors I have never opened up a coil  how ever some of the other members like GD, BA, Eugene,Paul just to mention a few have had many years of experience with detectors they will be able to tell you a lot more on this subject of opening up coils I suggest that you knock on one of their door and ask one of them I'm sure they will be happy to help you. Now I will have a look at your project and get back to you.

Regards Xavier
