I know it's out of warranty. I think I bought it in 2000? They had just came out according to Kellyco. Yes I have it open, the insides look brand new. I'm thinking that there's a component on the board that's cooked. I'm going to ask my neighbor when I see him to have a look. He owns a company that builds circuit boards. Figure it's worth a shot before I send it off.

It's kind of frustrating because there are well qualified engineers and technicians here who would absolutely love to help you but can't. Our hands are tied by the tyranny of distance. My test bench and soldering iron go begging until a new idea bursts into my gray matter and has me scrambling for parts. I just wish that science would catch up to Star Trek so you could beam it to me.

Sorry that this has been such a fizzle but troubleshooting from a distance is very hard. Occasionally, success. But not often.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I understand, I have people that call me wanting me to troubleshoot their pipes over the phone. Explain to them that I kind of need to see it.

Now theres an idea. I don't think the manufacturers care how,or where it's fixed,as long as you get a working machine that keeps you happy with their products.
I still love the idea that they gave you the full picture, instead of them just saying"send it in and we will take a look" and thinking to themselves,it's an oldie,we may not have the parts if needed.
You clearly want to use it because its good, they want you to be able to use it too cuz one day you will go back to them for a newer machine.
The chappy with the pcb biz would probably have a tech that knows more than even him if he can't figure it,and they might possibly be able to source parts that go way back from their contact list.
It's gotta be worth a few cold ones if he brings back a fully working machine and puts a smile back on your face, and old faithfull back in your hand!

Just spoke with Minelab again, explained to the tech was was going on with it. Asked if it was a board, would they be able to replace it? No.
My neighbor's going to look at it, he says if it's a component, it's possible to repair, but if it's in the circuitry, I'm SOL.

That unit uses what is most likely a outdated micro chip.  I'm sure it it has a PROM or EEPROM that contains the Firm Ware that may or may not be able to be replicated.

The problem is most likely some stupid simple thing that needs to be found.

The way you described the issue to me :

It Powered up.

It shut down.

It refused to Power up again.

I'm sure it's a Cap or Diode that went Dead Bug on ya.

Some thing in the power rail.  You measured the power on the connector to the board and it showed as good on a Un Energized circuit.

It could be your getting the Voltage but not he Current required to support the circuit.

I'm not so good working with SMT devices but it should be easy enough to trace.

Update on the Explorer. You were right, it was something simple. All they did was do a factory reset, & they said it's working fine. I should have it back in a couple of days. I've been using an Excalibur I picked up dirt cheap last week, interesting machine. Haven't had much luck with it at the beach, did better at a tot lot.

Hi there !

There's another procedure for reseting the EXplorer when there are no more solutions or when the Factory Reset doesn't works....:

1.- Open the Battery cover
2.- Push the On button and WHILE THE UNIT ITS STARTING PULL OUT THE  BATTERY.
This will perform a FULL FACTORY RESET not a semi-reset which is the same as far as i know to going back to basic settings.

That worked for me.
You can take a look at another post at Findmall talking about the same problem.....
