Your metal detector is a TIME MACHINE.  The government doesn't care what you dig up as long as it doesn't destroy their time line of His-story.  Or find something very valuable, then they want the bucks.  Of course you're not supposed to bring up the rich not paying anything for their gains huh?  So unless you are rich or part of the government...you're out of luck.  Kenniwick Man is a good example of how not to rock the boat.  Over and over again this has happened when people find evidence that doesn't jive with the establishment.  Is our History tainted with lies and deceptions?  If so who has hidden the truth from us?  Think about it.

Hi,
I am  new here from Phoenix ,Arizona. I just got into metal detecting. Since I live in the southwest, what should I do if I ever run across some? Do you report them to the state? Thanks in advance.

A lot depends upon when, where, and what.
If they appear to be significant finds, you might want to report them to the government entity that has jurisdiction over the area you are hunting.  In most cases in Arizona, that would be BLM, the Forest Service, or the State.   Since permitted activities on state trust land are rather restricted, if you do report a finding to the state, you probably want to tell them you found it while hiking or off-roading (assuming you have a recreational permit)---one or both of which you were surely doing at the time.  Otherwise you may find that you've opened up a can of worms you would have preferred to leave unopened.
If they are minor and/or very isolated and difficult to get to, leave 'em be.
What you don't want to do in either case is mess with them (beyond perhaps taking some pictures).   There are quite a few sites out there that are known and monitored, sort of like bait cars in a mall parking lot.

Here In Massachusetts What you find on your own property or other private property with permission to hunt of course, Is yours for the taking, But there is an exeption to the rule, If where you are digging turns out to be some sort of burial site / Human Remains...Well then you must notify the State and other authorities Immediately which is the right thing to do so it can be officially documented and preserved. Intentionally digging a burial site will no doubt land you in jail. People who have pillaged burial sites have ruined it for the honest hunter. It is for this reason that big brother keeps a sharp eye on what is found. Can't blame them.

I can and will show 'finds' whenever I can.  Drives the Feds crazy knowing there is nothing they can do, as I now live in Panama.  Here, I can look all I want, as long as I don't take out of the country, or sell.  The United States is becoming a police state sadly....moved here in 06 after I was busted for riding my bicycle without a helmet [$50].  Seems stupid, but after you add up all the 'little' freedoms we have given away it's HUGE.  When I was 10 I would go hunting with my single shot 22, now days I would wind up in foster care and my parents in jail.   sad state of affairs indeed.

What state did u live in ??

Kids around here still hunt and no one gets busted for it,
and here in TN , it's 16 and under that are mandatory to wear a helmet while riding a bike.
A motorcycle is all the time regardless of age.
