I think I am having more fun with the reading than with the detector.

Your just turning into a treasure hunter and moving away from coin shooting.

Look for Tom Townsends book about Galveston can not find my copy but think it was published in 1970 or 71

Hello from S. Houston. Hey Smokin many years ago I read about a pirate ship that put into Galveston to ride out a hurricane. The crew took shelter in the only brick building with others from the island. After the storm they found their ship had sunk between north & south Deer Island. Unfortunately while recently dredging the Houston harbor a lot of dredgings were dumped by the 2 islands.

Hey Spyder Welcome from Galveston. Thats one of the wreaks we were talking about. Several times over the years people have reported see rows of canons in the area.
Sorry Spyder we were talking about that wreck on another thread without coffee Seldom don't think good. I think it was 1816 or 1817 that it took place and as you pointed out dredging of the ship channel and the inter coastal canal over the years. A good example is  Pelican Island on old maps and reports Pelican was just a few acres were today it is several 1000 with many business's and an A&M Campus  all from dredging. I can take you to a place across from Bolivar that Lafitte held slaves were in the early 70's we found many bottles and relics but today its under 5 plus foot of sand.
That's why I suggested get as many maps from over the years as you can.
