I would be looking. The current going price for a goos meteorite specimine is about $1.50 per gram. I'm not interested in  the money, just the adventure and bragging rights...lol

The one problem with using a metal detector to find meteorites here in Alabama is the natural occurance of iron ore. It's everywhere, and if I set the descriminator too high, it won't detect them. I can dicern coins and jewelry from the iron deposits. Because of our high humidity, meteorites deteriate rather quickly when exposed to the elements. After only a few days, they are covered in rust and look much like the natural iron. Then the only way to tell is to find a rock that seems out of place. The value is also gone.

Welcome from CT. The early natives worked copper on Isle Royale in Lake superior. My son in law is a Nat Park Service archaeologist at Isle Royle and he said if I come within 100 miles of there with my detectors its pokey/slammer/hoosgow time Cry Cry Cry   rats....

I agree with your son-in-law. I wouldn't want a MD (except my own) around any of my historic arch sites either. Michigan and Lake Superior is the only area where native Americans worked any kind of metal. The rest were still in the stone age. The aboriginese of central and South America did work various metals including gold, silver, and copper which became their demise when the spanish arrived. When Desoto explored the southeastern US, Native Americans were fascinated with iron. Desoto's enterrage cut up pieces of iron from their shipsand body armor and traded them to the Native Americans for food and other supplies. Occasionally, we find these small pieces of iron on Native American digs. They're usually only 3 to 4 cm square or rectangular with a hole drilled in them. Their value as iron is nil, but the value as an artifact is enormous.
