| Tabdog, I use the Garrett Master Hunter CX. It's the older version but not much has changed. Maybe the soil I am digging in has some effect. If the target is beyond 8 or 9 inches, I don't get any response (if I use the headphones I get readings that are erratic and incomprehensible. The soil where I am doing most of my detecting now is highly mineralized and it's giving me fits.
What do you suggest? Thanks, Ken

Hay Ken,
Depth is a hard thing to get a consistant answer answer for.
When faced with highly mineralized and/or very conductive
soil, depth becomes a matter of what can contend with the
conditions.
I do not fully understand the different Garrett Master Hunter
CX Models. They are said to have automatic ground balance.
On older Garretts, they would have their own kind of automatic
ground balance, that actually did adjust to ground conditions.
Some of them worked better than others. Later, "automatic
ground balance" came to mean, "factory pre-set ground balance"
with garrett and all the other makers as well.
Now, automacic ground balance neans factory per-set.
If your Garrett does not adjust to ground conditions well, you
are at a dis-advantage in bad ground.
DD coils can help most detectors in bad ground conditions.
The older Whites like the 5900 DI Pro are proven to perform
under such conditions. They can still be purchased. I think.
I would value Christians opinion more than mine on this.
I hate to go off on machines that I have only read about.
Tesoro makes a great little machine, but the Lobo and
maybe the Sand Shark are the only ones that can do real
well in bad ground. I know that people will disagree with
that. I believe that only a few tesoroes work really well
in such conditions. User knowledge helps here.
But, it is common for people to be able to detect an
aluminum can that deep. Bad soil will change that for
most machines.
Maybe someone in your area can help.
Call a dealer. Find one who detects in your area. He
will have info, and you may even find someone else
that can help also.
You can post the question on the forum here.
Good luck and
Happy Hunjtin,
tabdog
