It's really quite simple to build a PI detector from a PIC and from all that you have told us so far I'm quite surprised that you do not attempt to build one on your own... you do know how to program and you do know the fundamentals of a PI metal detector don't you?

All the best
Xavier

yes X i can program
but i don’t know pi detector
the op-amp are real picky that’s why i wanted to start from somethings that works first.
i have a electronic lab here at the house and when done this will be all smd to keep the kit project down.
I really play with atl. energy need some time off...lol
I live in Phoenix az and have been told there is lots of gold around here.
I'm hopping that i can tune a device in for very small gold flakes (I would like to be as good or better then the minelab unit) wishful thinking......lol
I'm also building a dry washer and a wet washer (I forget the name) also I'm building a screw to separate... as a relief from work.
I'm building because i like to do things the hard way....lol
the PI looks better for what i want to do then the VLF or reg freq?
But i really don't detectors.
as a side note i hope you feel better and keep that great mind set you have

Don

Go here for a tutorial on each of the popular types of detector including the PI.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Thanks GD
I have read that info
That is why i decided to make a PI.
I've probably been on 10 sites or more doing my research.
I have found that all the reading one can do only amounts to a hill of beans compared to actual hands on experience.
you people know more on what you want then any engineer.

Would it surprise you to learn that some of our people ARE engineers ?

Not at all
that's why i ask for opinions and help.
a person can only know so much about so much. As i said this is just for fun for me
I do alt. energy and have been beating my head against the wall for awhile.
and hopping to make a few friends.

There are a few things that you will need to come to grips with, here are some of them, to build a metal detector even when you know what you want to achieve and you have the knowledge on how they work most of the time you just don't get what you want and some times they just don't work at all. In order to be able to build a decent metal detector you will first have to fail a number of times (that's how you will learn the most) Here are a few pointers to put you on the right path for building a PI detector. You need to know what coil you are going to be using then you will need to know all the timings that you are going to use like On time, Off time, Delay time, signal analysis time Ho did I mention that timing is the heart of the matter here LOL but all this timing should not scare you, use ADC lots of it then you will be able to do external timing ones you have that right you can just put it in your program and be rid with all the ADC it's a fun project that you want to do but it aint an easy one. Just one more thing if you want to find small flakes of gold you will need a small coil and as high a pulse rate as possible or the eddy currents just wont make it to your coil.

X
what about the different types of coils like a pancake or even multi pancakes

that’s why I’m  building a micro unit i will be able to see what I'm testing
from what I've read a 6 inch mono type is what i want to start with to give the best type of results.
6 inch at 8 high.....
but a pancake of
6 inch by 8 may be better
that’s where my thought pattern is at this time.
build then test
hopefully the design works with little or no problems.....(wishful thinking)

If you want to find small gold flakes you would be better off with a 3" or 4" coil. If I were you I'd use two coils one TX and one RX

Sorry I got it all wrong 5" or 6" coil is what I wanted to say I messed up in my conversion from cm to in

I agree X
that is what I've been reading also. That is why i said build and test ect.
