Danny, I know here in WA you also need the GPS coordinates for your corners. If you do not already own one, borrow or buy one. With a GPS, a good one is going to cost you more than a few dimes, but it is worth it.

Lines and Markers point on the map work here.

GPS is Good but not Legal here.

You Need a Description and Ft and Yards on the Map.

Ok! Not Illegal.    They just want the Legal description.

You were talking about the coordinates derived from the GPS then. What difference does it make how you got the coordinates? Do they really want you to use a sextant or a theodolite?

Homefire, Do you have a link to the requirement that Washington BLM wants GPS coordinates?
Here in Idaho, they frown upon GPS coordinates and require a claim's description as Aliquot Lots on surveyed land or Meets & Bounds on unsurveyed land.
I use a topo map and draw in the claim boundaries and then describe it's location relative to the Quarter sections, down to the minimum of 2.5 acres if need be. Such as the SW¼ of the SW¼ of the NE Quarter, etc, etc.
I've been able to claim up 5/8 mile of creek consuming only 40 acres with this method (their method).

No!    That's what they want here too.

Never heard of a GPS being used until this post.

They like stuff like the Third Rock from the Left 1000ft off the wash stuff here too.

Welcome from Arizona.
Finding "expired" mining claims isn't difficult, at least not in the western United States.   It just involves use of a couple of on-line BLM tools
 (

)
followed by verification in the official BLM and County records.
I can even find old claims that are now under housing developments....(doesn't mean I can work them, but I had no trouble finding them  Grin )

BA

I have always wanted to walk around a new housing development and find a good looking house then walk up to the door and tell the owner that I used to have a gold mine about 12 feet under his living room.  Then I would tell him there was five million dollars in gold nuggets in the shaft and if he would go halves with me we could rent a back hoe and have it out in an hour or so.  Of course he would refuse me because he would not have to split it since I just told him where it was.  But I can imagine somebody getting all worked up and thinking "hey with five million in nuggets, I would have enough to buy a new house anyway" and then demolishing his living room in search of the nuggets. Cheesy
