Go Up Go Down

Had a bit of an epiphany today. The further I whacked the rock in one direction, the greener it got. Was wondering if the greenish stuff was olivine...then I recalled reading about gold being found in greenstone belts. Guess I've stumbled across one of those belts.

Having a rather sensitive nose, I also noticed that the greener rock has a different scent than the "normal" granite behind me. The scent is more prominent if the rock is wet with a bit of water...kinda hard to describe it...muskier and heavier base notes with more sulphurous head notes, if I may borrow a few terms from the perfume industry. Should this holds true in future samples, I may not need a metal detector for this area anymore...and just use my eyes and nose! Grin

You surely must recall that there have been numerous discussions about using dogs to find gold. It appears that you may have found a particular source of gold that can indeed be sniffed out by a sensitive nose. Beagles seem to have very good sniffing ability. My Labradors do too but they have never been trained. They can find us easily (we've tried this and we cannot ever evade them) but if I asked them to find you, it's doubtful that they could. Besides, they can't afford the airfare.

Yes, very true...dogs have fantastic noses, and I've seen beagles and labs in the police k9 units. If i recall correctly, some can even sniff out cancer!

I found this article:

, haven't read it thoroughly yet...but there may be a correlation of more gold in areas where there are higher levels of massive sulphides, hence more color where the rocks stink more of sulphur. Haven't been able to identify that muskier base note yet.

So, have you picked a name for your new beagle?

I've been around dogs since before I could walk, and at one point had 7 adopted mutts. One by one they died of old age, the oldest having spent 15 years by my side. 2 of them put themselves in harm's way for my sake, and all of them were great fun and comfort. Though I'd dearly love to have a noble companion again, truth be told, it would be very hard for me to take another passing. And so I choose to remain dogless.

Me too and jet I'm so often tempted to get another but on a brighter note it looks like you have found a good spot you should look down a bit too.

All the best

I have heard that the sense of smell is much better in women than in men. Just get one of those instead of a dog and you'll be ready!

We just got a puppy on Easter and named him Toby. I would have picked Goldy if I'd thought harder.

Let us know how those musky digs turn out.

I sure would like to dig some silver coins. Until then, I guess I'll be happy digging 1930s beer cans!
