making little rocks out of big rocks with a sledge hammer is not my idea of fun....not unless I'm sure there is a big pay-off waiting for me.    Just how many pieces are you prepared to make it into to see what's inside?   (not saying don't do, just saying do you have any good reason based on finds in the area to start swingin' the hammer? )

I think before I went too deep I'd take a sample area that looks likely and crush and pan it. It's an interesting rock. Seems like there is some vitrification and a lot of iron in it. Is it magnetic?

Makita Hammer drill.

3/4 inch.

Drill a little more the 1/2 way in the rock.

4" apart.

Fill all holes with Quick Create. (use  funnel and st aw)

It will swell up enough to pop the rock.

If that fails, use 1/4 oz of BP and fuse them from end to end.

The sequence on small blast will fracture the beast.

Be sure to pack all bore holes with sand.

Disclaimer:   I do it this way and it works for me.

If you do it and get hurt , you did it!

homefire, your makita hammer drill sure sounds preferable to swinging a hammer

Yep!   Small gen on site, fixed my problem.

I've pooped rocks that was 6' round.

You can get 3/4 inch bits, with extensions that can get you to 48">>>

Not in the Hard Rock Area, but it works.!!

BP is getting hard to find but Pyrodex will work if you add 10 or 20%...

In over 30 years of picking at rocks for the shiny stuff, only once have I ever found pyrite near to gold. I found the gold first or I would have left the area. Normally, the two aren't found near each other for some odd reason. Might be superstition. Might be geological fact.

I spent a lot of hours panning and poking through pyrites to find gold flakes. Never found even one. Found a small 2 gram nugget and when digging it up, found a pyrite chunk in the same hole. Now, if I find pyrite, I go somewhere else. Even after that nugget find.

Homefire has the right idea. Use an impact drill instead of a hammer and save time. Your mind will play tricks on your for as long as you live if you don't look inside that rock, mate. You know it. I know it and anyone else here reading this knows it. It'll be like that song you can't get out of your head but worse.

Crack that rock open!
