Go Up Go Down

today i hiked around in a spot that i have never ever heard anyone say anything about, while i was hiking around i foud a small 4 inh by 24 inch gap in some dirt on the side of the mountain i was on.  i dug a little deeper and saw it to be the mouth to an abandoned mine, tomorrow after work, you can be assured that i will have my head lamp on and that i will be exploring it as much as possible, judging by the area, as well as the small little crack that made up the opening of the mine, i believe i am the first one to go in it since it's closure, probably in the late 1890's.

Be extremely careful......most of those old mines were closed for a reason.  They can be very dangerous places, especially if you don't know what you are doing.  If you have never been mine exploring before, at least take a look at one of these urls to see what you could be getting yourself into.

Thanks for the links, i've explored quite a few mines and caves before, and don't plan to go more than a couple feet inside.  i'll have at least one or two people with me and a tag line of life safety rope attached to a me as well as a head lamp.  i might even ask me fire chief if he'll let me bring an air tester that we have on our engine that reads more than carbon monoxide and the such.  adrenaline of a find can take over, in this case i am actually going to go back up there and pop my camera down in there and take some flash pictures or put one of our bright hand held flashlights from our fire department down in there and then take a picture, just to see what the depth and terrain inside of there looks like.  i'll be as smart about it as possible, anyone have any mine finds in utah or the surrounding states?

Sounds like a plan.

I'm all for taking risks and going where others haven't been (at least in a while).  But as we both know, people who rush in without considering the risks can get themselves and others into a whole heap of trouble.   That being said, if I was in the area, I'd be more than happy to help you lug some of that equipment  Smiley

Let us know what you find (pictures would be nice---even if they're just of an empty shaft)

thank you all for your encouragement and all of your good advice and knowledge, it's awesome to find people out there that appreciate the same things when it comes to history, the outdoors, as well as the wealth of knowledge that everyone posses.

Go Up Go Down

Back in the 70's a friend and I did the ghost town Mallory.

Old lead / Silver workings in southern Arizona.

We found a hole in the rocks not critter made or natural looking.

Dug it out with a soup can and found a Mine.

Inside we found a bunk, 1/2 case of 40X dynamite , tools and stuff.

Looked like there had been a rock dirt slide that had covered up the drift.

This mine was from back in the Civil War days when Mr Mallory got caught mining Lead for the Confederates during the war.

Who ever was using the Dynamite was much later as it had not been invented or in use during the war.

We covered the hole with bushes and came back three weeks later.

Every thing was gone.

They even took the Rail tracks that was there.
