I have agreed GD that I do not know anything about metallurgy but I have twice demonstrated that it is clearly a 14k ring and by the density and weight of 7.6 dtws.I also asked on one of my last reply that if it is not tarnish was is your opinion on the color of my first pictures and black marks after first polishing.Your reply will be appreciated.

Stop it, please. I am not now questioning if it is gold or not. I am now replying to the people who have hijacked your thread because they either can't or won't understand the reason why gold or its modern alloys do not tarnish.

I now believe your ring to be gold, not plated. Do you understand that bit? I do not believe it was tarnish that you saw on the ring. Instead I believe it was an electroplating of some kind probably caused by the water. As to your original question, unless you can measure both the thickness in microns of that layer and know the exact chemistry of the water, you can't determine how long it was in the water. Sorry about that.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Ok I got your answer and If I was a moderateur I will close the subject.I am not an engineer or a doctor and do not need highly technical answers that the general detectoriste will not understand. This is a hobby for me and really I do not give a dam with what I found is gold or not.I just taugh it was an interessting subject to approach instead of saying nice find. There is no need to express an agressivity in a forum  but to express your opinion in a proper manner which I think for my part I did.As you have seen I have asked mainly questions and they do not seems to me on a bad manner and for me the subject is closed.I have been  detecting for many years and been involved in many international forums.I have tried to be nice  beeing a newby. But then there is a limit and enough is enough.when I give advise on metal detecting I am assertive not on a defensive. To be medited ;)Like the French say " A bon entendeur salut" Grin
Ps: Ho sorry I just found out that in fact you are a Mod so please close the subject  Grin

Ok, one more question on the subject:  Do encrustaceans count as tarnish?  Or is that a separate catagory of discoloration?  (GD, please hold back on mentioning anything involving seafood!)  Cool

hay Back Atcha,

According to

The definition of tarnish is as follows;

Tarnish - A dulled luster or finish caused by a thin deposit
of a dirt which discolors the surface of metal and is easily
removed.......... Also a reaction between metals and other
chemicals which discolors the surface,,,, particularly silver
which reacts with sulfur [color]

Accpording to the deffinition,

I would guess that any tarnish there would ne cleaned off
when the crustrations are removed.

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

They are wrong on some things and right on others. It is you who looks foolish for believing them, mate. It is not corrosion. Gold and the metals in modern alloys do not have the ability to accept an oxygen atom so what they are describing is a plating process caused by a chemical reaction. That is what I have been saying all along. TabDog, if you look hard enough, as you have, you will find someone out there with an opinion just like yours. You choose to ignore the thousands who disagree with that just so you can make points here? How sad.

The facts are the facts and physics cannot be changed just because you do not believe in it. Sorry.

And I am an expert, TabDog. This is why I offer my expert opinion on the matter. You, on the other hand, can use Google.

Oh please give us a break.

And stop trying to spread mis-information.

I am tired of you trying to talk over evry one,
and insulting every body. I do not care how
smart you think you are. This is not a contest
to see who can make the best snide remark.

This is a forum for hobbiest, not the kind of
smarter than though exalted expert you tell
us you are.

You owe some oppologies.

But you are too intent on  spreadingt as smoke
screen and spreading wrong info.

Shame on you,

Tabdog

Then I suggest you stop acting like a bumpkin and start learning about science. This hobby as a stick swinger is far different when you design the sticks, mate. You use Google to find some obscure reference while ignoring thousands of others just so YOU can prove a point which turns out to be wrong.

Gold and gold alloys do not tarnish. Period.

And by the way, the Ace 250 does adjust for ground balance when it is turned on. I jumped out of that discussion to keep the peace between you and me but it seems that in spite of my high regard for you, you have none for me. Your choice, TabDog. All yours.

Ok that is your opinion no problem. As for the ACE250 I think that now I am miles away to discuss that kind of detectors which make me think. Huh?
Alan, I have great respects for you about your article on beachcombing but please do not suggest your SG.After 23 years of detecting I have all the jewellery equippment of testing  and those that mean after all that you are not convinced?.
GD.What is wrong with google? I use it it very often when I have a question.I like Wikepedia which I found very useful. If you have an objection to google information or mis-information I am sure anybody will be glad to hear about it.

It is OK.

Neither me or GD know a lot about the 250.
Just what the experts say.

Do not mind GD. He is getting to where he
has to impress every one all tha time.

We are supposed to be impressed. Huh?

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog
