Luc has all kinds of good treasure tales Smiley

Darien is on the Panama coast, at farthest point about 400 miles from Cartagena. If the three ships left Cartagena and sailed 3 days how far would they get? Perhaps there was already a headwind blowing south. It seems like a likely spot.

There are shrimping boats there. It would be interesting to check the local history of that area for cannon and treasure stories.

There is also a Darien on the coast of Georgia that hosts a shrimping fleet. Although I think that it's pretty unlikely they got that far it never hurts to look into it. Question is how old is the area there? How did it come to be called Darien?

A shrimp boat snagged into a bronze cannon in the general area she was lost and the gun just happens to date from this period. The gun was sold to a private collector for $15,000 but could have netted twice this amount if sold to a museum or in an auction. Another bronze cannon was also accidentally brought up in a shrimper's net within two miles of the other, but it dated from the mid-1770's and was from another wreck. Within five miles from where both guns were found, a chest of some 3,000 Spanish four and eight real coins, dating between 1748 and 1751 were also accidentally brought up in a shrimper's net.

Do you have any idea where this "general" area could be?

Aqua thats what we are working at finding. So far it seems like the most likely suspect is the northern coast of Panama. My next step is looking at hurricane accounts for 1563.

Thanks for the links Luc. I may have to get a few of those maps to hang in my studio.  Smiley

hi All I havnt much time at the moment , I was thinking the location of the recovered cannons would be the way to go to get in the ball park. Also the above mentioned  chest of coins will get us there. All storm records will be good also, the more info the better.
WE have a real nice day here weather wise in Zew Zealand, So i have to get going to make the most of it   Cool

The reason I am looking at other factors is that no one seems to know who pulled the cannons and coins out of the water or where?  Wink

It's the usual ambiguous reference to local fisherman in the area. It would be great if we knew that but for now we need other clues.

Ah the fun of treasure hunting Smiley
another tidbit I found was that Portobello was a usual stop for the plate fleet. Darien lies about halfway between Cartagena and Portobello.

Hi Idaho Jones

I see that the spirit of a researcher hard, live in you. We're all such a wonderful story of treasure and / or sinking, pushes us to carry out investigations even if we know we will never have the opportunity to go in places. Me too with "Rennes-le-Ch?teau" I work and I collect a lot of files and books on this case with the hope of one day say that my conclusions were right.

Hello Luc and Hardluck,

For me it's definitely the mystery and a need to find the answers that drives me. Perhaps someday Luc we will take the skills honed on stories we will never look for and use them on some future expedition? Wink

Problem is I am distracted easily by shiny objects like new treasure stories.  Cheesy so I file them away in my mind and pull them out when I find some new clue.

I have definitely enjoyed the posts by yourselves and others here immensely. Smiley Definitely keep on posting!
