gold or not, its a cool find. I test ALL gold, 10k, 14, 18k, 24, and silver with my home acid test, and have a jeweler look at stones for me. Ive seen no hallmark, wrong hallmark (in favor of me and against me). I'm sure someone here knows what year the government passed a law requiring the "K" or karat to be stamped on all gold. But in the old days blacksmiths, shopkeepers,  homeowners etc.. made their own jewelery. So you may find some really old stuff thats unmarked.

As far as I know the K system is still in place and they are allowed .5K error.   LOL   You know how that works out.

Yea the plumb gold did not go over well with the big makers. It was the International Jewelery Association not the government they still have the .5 +/-

Well Crap!   I'm sure I seen some gold being sold at the flea market as Plate marked 14KP.     I too thought it was plated.

Missed that bus.

My wife hits the garage sales and thrift shops several times a week in the last year bet she has found 5 pieces marked 14KP for a buck or less.

I just have the acid test, I can only tell if its at least 10K, 14k, 18k, 24k, and I'm sure it isnt accurate enough to know your getting jipped out of .5k lol but I dont know.

.5 don't sound like a lot to me and you and its not, but to the big manufactures that produce 1000's of pieces a week .5 can add up to 1000's of dollars in savings
